A new type of tube

Inner tubes with ends are now available in ebike sizes.

I've seen 'snake' style tubes for BMX bikes, but German company GAADI now has a range for 20" up to 28" wheels.

Mine has just arrived and it is, well, what it is, a tube with two ends.

Main advantage being, of course, you can fit it without removing a wheel.

Particularly handy for those of us with hub gears, or difficult to disconnect hub motors.

Mine came from Rose, but some of the other European sites/shops are selling them as well.

Having butting ends, they look more sensible than some previous attempts. Those often had overlapping ends which punctured through chafing.

It looks like the one end is domed and the other is dished so they should butt together well enough.

The tube is quite heavy, which reassures me, and looks decent quality - in so far as it is possible to tell.

The dust cap has a built in Schrader valve key which is a nice touch.

You say up to 28" I assume you are putting it in a 29er wheel! I dont have hub gears, but its still a pain out on the road, so keen to hear how you get on!

Yes Phill, it's for my Rose in the avatar which has Mavic 29" wheels, so they obviously take a 28" tube, as we all know.

The Marathon Supreme tyres are also marked 28 X 2.00.

As regards how I get on, you will only hear that in the event of me getting a puncture.

My new tube is strictly for spare/emergency use.

I know that early pre WW1 motorcyclists used butt ended tubes, but I think that they were more of a get you home device rather than permanent replacement.

They look pretty good, but did you see the video of the guy fitting one. You would think that a tube company would know the correct technique for fitting a tyre, but he forces it over the rim with a lever with absolutely no attempt to get the rest of the bead into the central well. No wonder I hear so many stories of people on this forum and their bike shops having trouble fitting tyres. How widespread is that ignorance?

Having punctured 3 times on he way home on a hub driven Ebike one night this week I can see the benefit of this.

However surely it only works if you have this tube in your bike and also as a spare. If you have to take the wheel off to get the punctured tube out, it negates the benefits surely? Or are you planning on having both tubes in there?

Thanks for the pointer Rob. These sound ideal for carrying for emergency use and I mean to get them for my Rose and my wife's Freego Eagle.

I appreciate Col's point above, however if the situation arose I think I would be ready to cut the punctured tube to get it out. I always have my Leatherman tool with me when out on the bike so it wouldn't be a problem.

After having the illegitimate child of a job repairing a single puncture recently on my Kalkhoff Xion rear wheel, I immediately purchased 2x MP Tours which added only about a pound and a half in weight over the OE Conties but much more in peace of mind. I carry a pair of inners in a seat post bag but I'd have no hesitation in switching to these Gaadi tubes if they produce them with Dunlop/Woods valves.

My current collection of three ebikes each utilises different valves and my favourite is the Woods type although I shall keep the Prestas on my road bikes and a Cannondale ebike, tyres being just one of many pared-down components contributing to the very light weight desirable in those machines.
