I have just bought a new bike which is perfect for me,but for the seat. As I am an OAP I could do with something a bit more comfortable, can any one help with suggestions please?

Well as one OAP to another, in my experience the first thing to do is make certain that your riding position is as close as you can get it to your ideal one, particulary in regard to saddle forward-back position and tilt.

The second thing to do is try and ensure that at least some of the problem isn't that your backside is not used to cycling.

And the third thing is to accept that all things being equal, a gel saddle will not necessarily be more comfortable than a leather one.

After that, you're on your own, chum ;)

Some people swear by Brook`s saddles , and some swear at them . I bought one and tried it and it did not suit me . I was reminded of an an old Lincolnshire expression used to describe blunt knife . " You could ride bare arsed to London on it " As a kid , I had this mental picture of people so riding in the fast lane of the A1 South . For me , the answer was a lightly padded gel seat and a lot of persistence .

Lets not go down the Brooks line again.

John has made a point of telling us he is an OAP. I am sure he does not want to spend 2 years breaking a Brooks saddle in.

I use one and I love it....at last. But it took a long time to get to this stage.

I would suggest a more modern, commercial saddle.

Welcome John

I am not an OAP yet.
I have been using Brookes saddles for years, I have three. I bought them off e bay, two were used and one was new.
I did not have a problem "breaking" them in; but it is important that they are adjusted correctly.
I see too many saddles with the nose up, I think people think it will help them stay on the bike. They should be level.
A Comfortable Saddle

Have a look at this link, also you have to be realistic, if you are new to biking you get sore legs and sore other bits.

I'm another vote for a Brooks . I prefer the b17 but my wife prefers the flyer (which is wider and also sprung)

I'm going to make a few assumptions from your OAP comment. These are you riding style will be more relaxed/sedate. This means you place most of you weight on the saddle. In more aggressive riding positions/style your arms and legs would take a greater percentage of the weight

As the Sheldon Brown article explains a padded gel saddle can often mean that too much load bearing weight is on the soft tissues and not on the sit bones. If you are a hardcore racer then far less wieght is on the saddle and it matters less. If, like me, you are a sedate touring style rider then it matters much more

Leather saddles are the best in my experience (and brooks the best of them)

I find for touring that a Brooks saddle combine with a suspension post makes for very comfy riding

The Post Moderne Cushy SL is excellent for the money at 25 quid and does take much of the worst road buzz

thats my tuppence anyway !

Ultimatley it is such a personal thing
