hi all ade here and new to forum i am looking for some info on e-bike kits i currently have ailen special (the battery is now dying )rather than spend £350 on a new battery for it i want to get a kit and build my own a have a 15ah ping battery so will only need kit without battery ,however as i am a heavier rider (15st) and a have to ride long distance and up many hills i need a little more power . is there any real difference between 250w motor and a 350 w motor ? of course i know 350w kit is not road legal. also is it poss to de-restrict the ailen special? any information and tips appreciated thanks

Hi To go with your 36 volt 15 ah battery you need a direct drive 350/ 500 watt motor

Kit like the one in the link below I recommend a rear motor better traction

The Bafang BPM is a geared motor not a direct drive one and is very capable of taking you up hills. 350w means you can put more power through the motor and it will sustain a higher power output without damage.

Hi Ade,

Firstly welcome to the forum.

I can supply an eZee conversion kit without battery. eZee kits have a powerful 250 watt high torque motor which I am fairly sure would be quite adequate for your needs and still legal.

They can be destricted to travel at 20+ mph, which is above the legal limit of 15.5 mph, but that is stricly for use on private property and not on public roads or cycle paths.

You can find more details via the link to my website below.

Just a thought....is it very easy to switch between restricted and deristricted with your kit...or is that a daft question...?

Hi Funky,

It is not difficult, but as I say illegal and of course results in a faster drain on the battery than if operated in restricted mode.
