Please can someone help my e-bike I bought of Facebook market place has an error code 03 info I have googled it and says disconnect and reconnect plugs running to motor
When I rode it last it was making some struggling noises from the motor
It says velo trade on the motor and I think it was imported from Ukraine
Can anyone give me some assistance on what to try next
The controller and plugs were warming slightly when I had a play with it last night

The motor mechanically is fine, the noise you are hearing is 100% an electrical commutation fault.
It might be phase or possibly Hall sensor wire issue.
  • Firstly check that motor cable connecot one can see in the pic , it looks to be fully together but double check. There is a raised embossed line where the arrow is indicated , it should be tight up against the opposite female connector.
  • The motor cable entry to the axle looks very tight /taught , damage can occur at this point so check for splitting or crushing of the cable.
  • Even if the outer cable looks ok , damage can occur inside the cable which may go unseen when the cable is at an acute angle .
  • Follow the motor cable to the controller check all phase and Hall connections for secureness /tightness.

In future stay way from dodgy Farcebook deals with ebikes.
03 error is usually motor phase wire fault with non KT controllers.
If it were a KT controller then the fault would indicate a Hall sensoe/wire fault.

I have checked the cables again and all connected tightly also checked the cable going into motor it has a spring on it to stop it bending too tightly when I press the throttle now no error code comes up but the cables warm up and the motor does not spin

so I disconnect cable and try throttle and the 03 info code comes up

Is there a way I can test the cable with a multimeter

If the cable heats up, the power is only going to one phase( assuming that the motor isn't jammed somehow). Potential causes in order of popularity:
1. Motor connector not pushed in far enough.
2. Damaged cable, either cut where it comes out of the axle or squished by over-tightened zip-ties.
3. Blown MOSFET in the controller.

If you try to run the motor when it doesn't turn, you often get 3 above in addition to the cause of it not turning, so you now need to do the MOSFET test.

How do I do a mosfet test please

There are many videos on youtube explaining how to test mosfets using an ordinary multimeter.

It’s quite difficult to explain in a post. You need to activate and deactivate the gate and check the source and drain turn on and off.

And to do that you need to open up the controller. And make sure all of the capacitors are discharged properly first, otherwise you will probably get a massive spark when you start poking around with the multimeter.

If one has W/P connectors , it makes the job harder unless one makes up Y lead for testing. A Y lead connects in between the motor and controller.
If one has bullet or block connectors then the test is easy peasy.

I have taken controller out of the box and double checked all cables and no visible damage can I expose cable buy the axle somehow to explore for damage
Otherwise what is the next step

What was the result of the MOSFET test?

It has 2 9pin connectors between motor and controller
One is close to the controller and one closer to the motor
What do I need to make or is there a lead you can buy to test please

You don't need to make any lead. You just need a meter. If you had searched, like I suggested. You'd already have answeres and instructions. Don't be lazy at our expense.

Now that you have removed your controller you can open it up and do a mosfet test. Checking for short circuits is easy and with a little bit of YouTube research you can do an open circuit test as well. That will either confirm or eliminate them.

And you can also do a continuity test on your cables. You can’t tell the cables are ok just by looking at them they may be damaged internally.

One can carry out the tests by opening the controller. Power isn't needed to test the mosfets for failure so one shouldn't cause damage.
