Best way to climb a hill for battery/motor health

Full power all the way for me, the 250w power limit means the actual motor will never really be approaching burnout, and Li-Ion batteries are good at providing peak amps consistently and are designed for this. More demanding are big hill starts, as you push off the battery will be providing a...

    SJCAM

Strictly speaking formatting a card installs a new file system, used to to be FAT16 for old tech but any card these days will be FAT32 and factory formatted. You'd only need to format it if you we're using something that doesn't read FAT32. Great cameras the SJCAM, the SJ400 was so good as a...

    Riding in the rain

Post Meon Valley run... If you think the DM's need a clean then it's nothing compared to the bike (too dark to take a photo). The skirt guard thing saves a lot of trouser cleaning.

    Riding in the rain

...The duster under the battery serves 2 purposes, rattle reduction and a handy, err, duster. But that is where the bike lives, day and night, uncovered, and it looks not bad for 2.5 years old.

    Riding in the rain

Well alright, my bike is not an offroader, but where it lives gets mucky and I'm brave and sometimes do the meon valley trail, I'll do a before and after photo... This is today, after cleaning...

    Riding in the rain

Heh! I cleaned it yesterday. Have you tried cleaning? It's good for the soul.... ... Gave it the upside down treatment yesterday and there was all kinds of muck lurking, bits of straw, leaf mush, horse ****, but you know what? Half an hour later and she was looking shiny. Oiled the rust on the...

    Riding in the rain

No, I tried a cover, but couldn't be faffed. There is not much to rust on it, chain and sprockets, but they get oil, most of the nuts and bolts are stainless steel, etc. As I say, I use it all the time, which must help shake off any water lurking in crevices. Plus a spray of WD40 fairly often.

    Riding in the rain

All weather, all year, and the bike lives outdoors, regular (daily) use and care and maintenance is more important and effective than worrying about corrosion or water damage. Battery tends to stay on the bike unless indoors charging. Couple of times seen some 'green' on the connection of...

What's the deal with frequently broken spokes?

I kept on getting loose spokes on my rear hub, quite alarming wheel flex at one point, local bike shop wouldn't touch it as they said it had to be done on a jig or they couldn't guarantee wheel integrity. I bought a simple multi-guage tool and tightened up the worst offending spokes whilst...

HELP - Just LOST assist function on my Kalkoff Endeavour ?

One thing I've noticed about my bike is that the handlebar controls do not like pervasive heavy moisture. My bike lives outdoors year round but it is only when it has been outside in heavy, cold, fog for a day or so that the buttons play up. Causing much anxiety! They either stick ON or don't...

    Is there such a thing...

Due to an ordering muck up I never did receive my Brooks so I cancelled that and I got an £8 saddle from Wilco as the original had almost fallen apart, makes you wonder, really, it's comfortable enough and seems to shrug off rain.

    Is there such a thing...

4,000 hard miles on my Sparta and counting, just a set of brake pads, and the battery is still doing or saying about 40 miles per charge. The saddle is knackered though, too many days left out in the wet. Have a Brooks arriving next week, 70 quid! But should last forever. It was £2,500 to buy...

    HUB MOTOR CAPABILITY

Come back to me when you have done 4,000 miles. Rubbish about the battery on the back. It's been nothing but a great thing to have.

    HUB MOTOR CAPABILITY

Yeh but that's just wearing it in. You don't buy a nice electric bike without knowing how to look after it.

    HUB MOTOR CAPABILITY

Well, when it displayed the overheat message I hadn't even started to ride, it was a rare baking hot day and the bike had been in direct sunshine for hours. Of course there are more powerful motors, but you miss a trick, old school derailleur layout is the most efficient power train by a...

    HUB MOTOR CAPABILITY

Erm, yeah, just to say, this is rubbish, ride 1000 miles on another man's bike and come back with an opinion. A 1 in 10 hill is nothing for my Sparta, a fit cyclist can output 100W continuously so with 250W you are already 2.5 times more powered, Yes it was £2000 but 4,000 miles in I consider...

10,000 Miles on a Kalkhoff Agattu with 18Ah Battery

Those early Kalkhoffs do seem to be bulletproof, I occasionally meet up with someone who has had one for 5 years and it's like new it really is. I had a go on it recently though and compared to my Sparta it felt really quite slow and sedate, a cruiser rather than than something nippy. Also there...

Sparta RXS @ 2300 miles (and thumbs up for JustEBikes)

Update on last report. Bike now 18 months old. Magura brake pads replaced @ 1900 miles then at around 2000 miles the 'service advised' message started showing. I was still able to ride the bike fine but then at 2100 miles the display became intermittent and then stopped completely. No power. I...

E-Roadies looking a lot less unconventional

Hmm, I had a Giant Rapid 3, great bike, fast and light, similar spec Aluxx frame. It cost £600. With the speed cutoff at 15.5mph I can't see that the e-bike equivalent has much point to it? I could get up all but the steepest of hills on the Rapid and my cruise speed was only a bit less than...
