    NiMh Temperature sensor error NTC

You need to identify the pins on the battery connector pins that connect to the internal thermistor. In the case of a 3 pin connector one of those will be common, another will go to the other battery terminal and the third will go to the other thermistor terminal. The 2 pins that have no...

    Winter Tyres

I too have found the marathons a bit slippery on mud, I presume it's because there's no knobbles to dig in and grip and I guess all road tyres are the same. While mtb type tyres would have an obvious advantage on mud, and possibly snow to a lesser extent, I doubt that anything short of...

    battery range in colder weather

Most battery types don't perform as well in the cold, on a few cold occasions I've had to warm digital camera batteries in my hands to make them work. Try keeping your battery in a warmer place prior to use , or charge it just before using it so that it is still warm from the charge. Once in use...

    Bike Alarm (Q bike) Update

The lithium battery works fine Peter, I don't expect 10 years from it but it should last longer than an alkaline. I think the alkaline instruction really means don't use a standard zinc-carbon type. My alarm is mounted horizontally and works ok.

How light can ebikes be made? (for a reasonable cost!)

How about linear induction motors built into the road surface, then all we'd need would be an aluminium plate on the bike, no need to carry a motor even. The down side would be that anyone with a pocket full of coins could unexpectedly be propelled down the road at high speed. :D On a...

    Cycling on pavements

In Leicestershire there are a number of "dual use" pavements, some with a white dividing line, some without., normal pavements are not legally open to cyclists though. Personally I don't like cycling on pavements, including some of the dual use ones because pedistrians tend to walk unpredictably...

How light can ebikes be made? (for a reasonable cost!)

Hello Stuart, mainstream alloy bikes got down to about 14kgs a long time ago and have stayed there, expensive specialised bikes have continued to get lighter but as has been seen from some of the spectacular failures that occur in races such as the tour they are only just strong enough to do...

    Bike Alarm (Q bike) Update

Hello Peter, my alarm works with a fresh battery, but to starts behave erratically as the battery ages and the voltage begins to drop. It's now got a lithium PP3 that is supposed to last for 10 years in its intended smoke alarm application. Mine is mounted with thick cable ties to the rails...

How many electric bikes do you see out on the roads?

New legislation won't affect existing bikes, only new sales. The Ezee bikes are all legal in the rest of the EU where the legislation has been enforced for some time now, presumably with the switchable pedelec mode being the only powered mode available.

How many electric bikes do you see out on the roads?

They have their own regulations, one of them being 7mph maximum speed I believe, another being "specifically for the use of the physically handicapped persons". As far as I know, as long as they comply with their own legislation they are not treated as a motor vehicle.

    A legal question or two....

Check the sellers feedback, a few comments about items not correctly described with one recent purchaser of a different item calling him a scammer. Sounds dodgy to me,

How many electric bikes do you see out on the roads?

I've seen a couple more this week, a Powabyke and a rather neat looking unknown bike with very slim batteries mounted pannier style either side of the carrier. Although I'm seeing increasing numbers of people riding electric bikes, it's very rare to see anyone pedaling one which does make me...

Response to Flecc's advice on hill cut out

Like Flecc I have never experienced a cut out with NiMh on either my Sprint or Torq other that with a completely flat battery, even in the most challenging terrain where the motor stalls despite the best efforts of man and machine.

    A legal question or two....

I'm sure that the full version of 2002/24/EC rather than the brief summaries usually seen does specify on-board batteries, I wish I could remember where I'd seen the specific extract. There is also the forthcoming CEN standard which will define a "safe" pedelec, and the existing construction and...

    A legal question or two....

I can certainly understand your attraction to such a system, the limited range of current EPAC's is certainly a negative point. However adding a hybrid transmition would surely make the machine a hybrid motorcycle rather than an EPAC, in the same way that your Prius is not an electric car, it...

    A legal question or two....

I agree totally Jeremy, but I'm not a lawyer, policeman or politician. I also agree that the chances of being stopped are pretty minimal but there is is always the possibility of an accident which if serious enough would lead to a police investigation etc.

    A legal question or two....

I think the problem could be in the way the EU EPAC regulations are worded, I did did see it in writing once, possibly in a to B, and it's quite specific about battery power only. Of course lawyers earn their obscene fees from interpreting laws and regulations and nothing is certain until tested...

    A legal question or two....

I think the wording of the regs says battery power only, of course it may be just a load of hot air. :D

    A legal question or two....

I agree with Miles, I think once the bike had a IC engine on board that would be deemed to be the power source, even if indirectly. It does raise interesting questions though, at least to a lawyer, as it is obviously perfectly legal to charge a spare battery from a petrol generator away from the...
