    Legal Pitfalls

It's a brave and foolhardy man who contradicts me on this subject. First ghost pedalling is still pedalling having to be done, so not in not way a contradiction what I posted. Member Stumpy with one artificial leg can find ghost pedalling difficult at times for example. Now to deal with...

stop close passing for about a tenner

The Dutch often do this sort of thing. Even after buying a brand new bike they'll hand brush paint it roughly, add worn out panniers etc to make it look not worth even riding, let alone stealing. .

Changing from hub motor to mid drive

Depends where one lives. If I lived in the very flat Netherlands I would do like almost everyone else there and ride hub motor to gain from the reliability and ease of low cost repair etc. Peak District or parts of Scotland and North Wales I'd choose crank drive or say sod it and drive instead. .

Changing from hub motor to mid drive

Even when in the trade I never removed a wheel to repair a puncture. Just take out the tube on the opposite side to the chain and patch it. I often dont even take a wheel out to change a tube or even a tyre. Just remove the left wheel nut and use a bit of muscle:

    Theft resistance

I'm in London, Britain's bicycle theft capital. But in 55 years in my current area shopping from local supermarkets and other shops with bikes and pedelecs I've never lost a bike or any part, or suffered any damage. That is despite using the simplest of cable locks and on one occasion just a...

    New seasons adventures underway

Yes, I'd heard that too. Perhaps not surprising, since with only a quarter of our population they buy a third of a million pedelecs each year. If each one lasts ten years, that's equal to every fifth person of any age having a pedelec. .

    New seasons adventures underway

It's perhaps the one time when the lack of popular e-biking in Britain is a blessing, Imagine if we were like the Netherlands where 70% cycle, a very high proportion on e-bikes. Dozens of pedelecers at cafes, pubs, stations etc all hopefully clutching chargers, multiple batteries and leads ! .

    Legal Pitfalls

It's even more complicated than that: Firstly a type approved pedelec doesn't exist, in law being type approved means it becomes a moped everywhere the EU type law exists, including here in Britain. The only difference here is that the DfT has arrange for the police forces to ignore the law...

    Nasty pothole

Sometimes it's better they don't "fix" them. This was Hesiers Hill after Tandridge Council resurfaced it:

    Legal Pitfalls

You probably enjoy what is called "Grandfather Rights", meaning that existing equipment remains legal. The principle being that laws cannot be retrospective, back dated, since that would infer criminality before the new law even existed. For example, although the law now bans fully acting...

    Legal Pitfalls

In January 2022, new rules came into force that meant all new wood-burning stoves, multi-fuel stoves and fireplaces manufactured would need to meet new guidelines called 'Ecodesign. ' The government also issued a ban on the burning of wet wood and house coal and urged households to switch to...

E-scooters 'are five times safer than bikes' - Study by The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents

The only reason Boris Johnson accepted the trial of these American machines only was to curry favour with the USA in the hope of getting a post Brexit trade deal. Since first Trump and since Biden have made it clear that it's "America First" and no trade deal, this is what we should do...

    Brexit, for once some facts.

One side of the story. China has also made the worlds largest switch to electric vehicles, so much so that their cities often cannot even buy any other type of bus. They are also in parallel maintaining their efforts at decarbonisation with green energy. 2030 looks like being a world wide...

Indeed I am, and why I've lived in this home since late 1967. I've always had mixed feelings about my 8 years in Bournemouth from mid 1946 to late 1954. Coming from Greater London I didn't like the people there at the time, stuffy, old fashioned, often unfriendly and even offensive at times...

Indeed what so many would like, but it's only possible for a tiny minority to satisfy their innate conservatism. The rest of us just have to live with inevitable continuing change. However, I live in London. Just 80 yards east from a lovely 200 acre nature reserve, and I'm on the committee...

    Brexit, for once some facts.

You just can't help yourself can you? Electric cars cost much more at the moment due in part to their low scale of manufacture and sale. Not because of all the resources going into them, since in fact they use less resources overall. The other factor is that the car makers are fed up with...

    Brexit, for once some facts.

There's another argument for a large battery, less stress in normal usage due to the car working at far below it's maximum potential most of the time. That is why e-car batteries are lasting ten years while e-bike batteries working at near maximum only last half or a quarter that time. .

    Treatment under garantee

No this isn't standard for the decent pedelec trade, but I'm afraid if one buys illegal 1000 watt bikes from the get rich quick opportunists like Rich Bit, it's what you must expect. Traders who ignore the law when they sell are just as likely to ignore consumer protection law when help is...

Oh I think we've proved ourselves more than capable of stripping ourselves of industries and even commerce as well. We did a fine job of both before we ever joined the Common Market, then accelerated that thanks to Margaret Thatcher's insane policies rather than any EU influences. And since...
