    Riding in the rain footwear

Thick woolly socks seem to do the job in the wet. Multiple pairs when really cold. One trip back in February I wore three pairs, but it was sub-zero most of the day. West coast of Scotland, we rarely have wet and really cold due to the Gulf Stream.

    Riding in the rain footwear

Wellies are fine for shortish trips. My commute is 20 minutes max, offroad wet and muddy in winter, and they do fine. Longer trips I use Crocs and dry socks when I arrive!

    Legal ride or not?

Type approval is not needed by pre 2016 'twist and goes'. The government website words don't say so explicitly because they don't need to: they expect this to be understood by inference from stating what is required from 2016.

Broke connector between handlebar display to controller (Pinacle Mercury)

I would carefully unwrap the insulation layers and document the colour and order of the 5 wires each side, and then cut off the damaged connectors, and rejoin in the way that best suits your needs. I would temporarily reconnect using screw terminal block to check the bike then works properly...

Experiences with Open Source Firmware on the Tongsheng TSDZ2

Your battery is not 750W. That's the wrong unit. W is watts, meaning power. Battery capacity is stated in 'watt hours', written Wh. These units are frequently confused, but are not interchangeable. Power is not capacity. If you check the label or spec, you will likely find your battery is 48V...

    Storing bike for winter

If its dry, lube once, then a short ride, then lube again to avoid any missed spots...

End of season solar trailer tour

Just my own take on low carbon travel in a fairly northern latitude! If you search the forum for 'solar trailer' there are other threads covering most of my solar miles since the start in March 2022. In winter I choose my weather carefully, and instead of solar, I carry multiple batteries and...

End of season solar trailer tour

Home successfully yesterday, in time for work today. A rather long, drawn out ending with those poor days of weather and then a missing ferry to contend with. I charged until almost full at Ardnamurchan lighthouse, then rode almost to Salen to take 25 miles off the final day. A fine weather...

Mizanur Rahman death: Coroner calls for e-bike battery standards

The missing standard is requiring the battery to be resilient to a wrong voltage charger.

Shame they are no longer in use, must have been a hell of a sound!

End of season solar trailer tour

I've just arrived at my fourth cardinal point, Ardnamurchan Point lighthouse. Last night I camped in a double not spot, no signal on either of my mobile networks after the shortest day of my solar powered adventures, just 25 miles. It was a dull old day, and I waited until 2pm before setting...

End of season solar trailer tour

I'm enjoying that rarest of things on my trips, a rest! The most productive thing I can do right now is maximise charging from a low watery sun, and wait. I will probably move on in late afternoon when the main charging hours are over for the day. The remaining miles to the lighthouse contain...

    Carrera Vulcan drive train

Always helps to post pictures of the existing one, including closeup of any label or markings. Someone will know what it is then!

End of season solar trailer tour

Whilst Kent suffers a sixth successive 30C day, my sunshine has gone. I ground out 49 miles towards Ardnamurchan, but 39 remain, and a ferry I need for the short way home will not be running. That adds 40 miles or so: this may go down to the wire! I rode the first section from the Skye bridge...

End of season solar trailer tour

Yes, but not on my bike. Very close to home. A very impressive arch, and I'm sure I read it has some rare flowering plant growing in the stonework.

Alternative mounting of mid drive motor

I have bought individual components secondhand, mainly via eBay, as and when they have come up. I use Shimano, many would warn against on perceived reliability and unserviceability grounds, because it is the only brand I have experience of. I have a Ridgeback X2 which got me into ebikes...

End of season solar trailer tour

Day 15, 84 miles of which 75 were main road. The weather forecast over the next two days demands that I put the primary objective of S, E, N and W most points, and getting back in time for not just work, but enough rest beforehand above adding desirable extra miles. So Ullapool to Garve, right...

Alternative mounting of mid drive motor

I shall try both, and perhaps a rear hub motor too. I"m very comfortable with the Shimano e5000, after 22,000km of experience, so starting with that removes some unknowns. I didn't buy the spare e5000 with this in mind, it is backup in case I discover the life expectancy of the first one in my...

Alternative mounting of mid drive motor

That's a useful bunch of measurements. My plan was always to build a new front boom section, which can be fairly agricultural in prototype form, taking great care with diameter of the end that fits in the frame. There is not much room for error there as not much range of adjustment and...

End of season solar trailer tour

Day 14, Scourie to Ullapool via the mad little road and the pie shop. Probably the hilliest day yet, and a reminder of why 100 mile days live in the east! Another beautiful sunny day so no energy issues, but the shortening of the days is becoming quite obvious. I walked out of Tesco in Ullapool...
