    Commuter Specific Clothing

I wear waterproof trail shoes. A little heavier than trainers but lighter than boots and flexible. They have a gortex liner, can pick them up about £40 in TK max or £90 if you shop anywhere else!

Does this sound OK kit to buy?

Yes I did thanks, it is according to the email I got back from BMS, very speedily they responded too. Just put my order in for the bike and all the other bits like a new jacket and lock on my bike scheme at work, as soon as it's confirmed that's going through I'll put my order in for the...

Does this sound OK kit to buy?

Yes, semi slicks are great on dry tracks, but in the mud they struggle, it's not what they are designed for. I'm hoping a combination of off road treat, wider tyres and some assistance from the motor (not the motor taking over, but evenly spread will produce a 2 wheel drive effect and enough to...

Does this sound OK kit to buy?

Yes I use a hybrid at the moment. It's fine in the summer, but I do find after the wet, particuarly in during winter part of the canal get so muddy that I'm slipping all over the place on those narrow wheels and I really don't like the idea of sliding about at night in the depths of winter next...

Does this sound OK kit to buy?

Ok, after followng the forum for a couple of months I think I'm ready to take the plunge and buy a kit and a new bike to convert. Does this sound OK kit? Bike : GT Avalanche 1.0. (like this becuase it has a 180mm front rotor and it's on offer, making it a bit of a bargain, It's Deore /XT...

    Another battery question

Great stuff. I like the idea of the bottle as it's so neat. I also want to be able to use it to help pull my little one along on the tagalong which a big rear battery may interfere with. Those are much shorter runs, maybe 5-8 miles although a little hillier. Again I can peddle that far with the...

    Another battery question

Apologies if been answered before, did search for it but couldn't find answer. So I'm a gnats breath from ordering everything for my conversion project. I commute 25 miles, most of which is along a fairly flat canal (as canals are). I do this at present unpowered, but it's a bit much...

    Security of bikes...how nickable?

I'd be wary about leaving a 2k bike at the train station. It's too tempting a target unless it's locked down so tightly it's more effort than its worth to steal, but 2k is worth a lot of effort. Camouflage may help work, wrap it in tape to give it a scuffed knackered appearance and choose a...

    Is it practical ?

I should think so. I live not a million miles from you and do Farnborough to Woking along the canal, it's 12.5 miles each way but I just use a regular bike, self build hybrid projec starting soon. Takes me about an hour each way, parts of it are quite rough and that really slows you down. I...

    Annoying wobble.

I'd probably try and take the hub apart and rebuild. Rest assured wherever your wobble is it will be in the last place you look!

Advice - Ebike Kit via Cycle2work - what's my best option?

The various bike schemes are still a great way of buying a bike, particularly if you pay higher rate tax. They changed it last year so that you had to pay VAT, but can still make a good saving. You only have to pay the lump sum at the end if you buy it outright, Evans Cycles do a deal on...

    Cannot unlock my bike!!!!!!!!!!

Oh good luck with that. I wouldn't spend too much time on that. It's probably time for the old bolt cutters. I've had to remove a few locked bikes as part of a job I used to have, car jack works wonders for D Locks, but it's probaby down to an old fashioned drill or boltcutters for that lock...

Any disadvantage with a front wheel hub ?

yes, it's a personal preference thing. I like smaller frames because they have slightly less weight but more importantly for me the top tube is a bit shorter, so my hands are closer to my body making for a more upright riding position.

Any disadvantage with a front wheel hub ?

Hi Mike, I’m 5’7” and have a 29” inside leg so pretty similar to you. I ride a 15” Mongoose Hybrid on 700c Wheels which is about right for me. As a baseline you should be able to just touch your toes of both feet at the same time on the floor when sat on your seat on a level service. When...

    Helmet mounted video camera

Just curious, how will a video camera help solve the problem of agressive / poor drivers. Surely it's too small to act as any kind of deterrent?

    Latest cycle helmets

I wear a helmet on the grounds that the potential protection they offer for me outweighs the potential pitfalls, i.e some cushioning in a crash vs messed up here. Um, a degree of crash protection please. Those who don't can do what they like, it's their head.

    Eye & Bungy strap

I really hope you make a recovery. I'm an adult instructor in the Army Cadet Force, last year one of the cadets in the organisation lost an eye to bungee while putting up a basha. You really can't be too careful with these things, it's essential a bit of metal under a great deal of potential...

What is the maximum price you would spend on an electric bike?

I think there are three distinct types of buyers. 1. Want it as cheap as possible, will pay as little as possible. 2. Mid range, up to £1k. £1k is a natural ceiling in this market because many like me will use cycle2work scheme. £1,001 makes the bike something like 40% more expensive if you...

Knocked off my bike this morning- Write off?? Advice?? Fault??

Glad you are OK, it must be that time of year, I've had 3 near Misses in the last 7 days, all overtaking on right hand turn related in quiet streets, starting to wonder what I have to do it be seen on the road. I already have a high vis waistcoat, high vis hump rucksack cover, high vis...
