Don't want to sound patronising, but have you found the cable adjusters on the brake levers? If you set to mid point, squeeze new blocks to the rim, then tighten the cable at the brake end, you should be close and can fine tune with the lever adjuster?

Its quite easy to get it wrong with all the possible adjustments - could be worth spending a few hours googling 'how to adjust bike brakes' for some tips?

Plenty of life left in those. Just need a clean up with a knife and more regular adjustment...

Sprocket change will make a difference of 1/16 or approx 6%... The change in potential energy in raising 20kg over 1000m is 20x9.81x1000 J or 55Wh. That would need 100% efficiency which you can't get near, so you're right its a significant effect on your battery range!

The braking effect sounds like a direct drive motor possibly also with regen. A geared hub motor with a sprag clutch can be pedalled normally above the assistance speed with no significant drag. Interesting how the different bikes all have different characteristics!

No offence taken, I actually agree with you, but most of the population clearly don't judging by the amount of car journeys vs bike journeys.

I get it, but 'favourable conditions' are not the norm outside of Holland. My Giant MTB is never a pig to ride. Without the battery, it's still more enjoyable than a cheap conventional bike with low end components.
