On further investigation into this device it appears that the distributors of these devices are www.e-totem.org based in Czechoslovakia.

It cuts off the motor during gear changing thus protecting the transmission chain and can be wired in parallel with the brake cut-out or fed directly into a specially designed controller.

I wonder if they would supply samples for testing?

They also sell e-bikes:

the cure may be worse than the problem. It took me only a few tries to learn to reduce power before changing gear. Wiring in this sensor is not easy as the cabling needs to be watertight. A better design would incorporate the gear change signal into the controller like the Xiongda XD. Best solution is to have a clutch built into a hub gear.

The theme from 'The Persuaders', followed by 'Six Million Dollar Man'. They will certainly have some persuading to do, especially if being bionic is a requirement!
