Finding my (electric) wheels

Hi, I'm trying to fix a non functioning Woosh sirocco. The battery is fine and the led display lights up but the motor won't turn.

Looking at the controller that is installed (and it might not be the original), there is power to the 3 phase motor wires. One thing I have noticed is that the 5 wired motor hall sensor wires (at least I think that's what they are) have been cut and covered by duct tape.

I'm new to brushless motors but I assume the sirocco has hall sensor's but why would anybody cut them off the controller?

I'm debating about rewiring them back up.

firstly anyone have a schematic of the woosh sirocco controller? and should the controller fitted be one with a motor hall effect?

Regards

Somebody might have decided that there was a faulty hall sensor, so changed the controller to a sensorless one.

It's not possible to tell that you have power on the phase wires without a ebike tester, so how do you know there's power coming to them?

Always the first thing to do is check that you have 5v between the red and black throttle or PAS wires, which shows that the controller is switched on.

thanks,

you're right confused myself about the phase wires. In regard the controller it has what looks like a hall senser plug, which is plugged into the controller plug but the wires have been cut and duct taped.

Question - if the motor was a hall sensor type and the sensor wires have been cut surely the motor won't run? - sorry if this is a dumb question.

I'll check the throttle and PAS wires.

Motors can run with or without hall sensors. It's the controller that can't. There's three types of controller: For sensored motors, sensorless and dual mode. The dual mode ones can auto-detect the hall sensors. It's often written on the controller what type it is. Can you show a photo of the controller's label.

Thankfully, Woosh spare parts are very cheap. You could save a lot of messing about and get a new one, but then you have to re-join the wires.

As a general rule, motors run better with hall sensors.

I take it you bought this bike second hand? Only we clearly would not have supplied it new with wires cut and various things taped so I am guessing the previous owner did this for some reason. D8veh is right, we are well stocked for spares. Email us - support@wooshbikes.co.uk - and we'll see what we can do.

the 2011 Sirocco motor has Hall wires, 2012 (and later) Sirocco has 8Fun SWX motor without Hall. It's easy to know which one is which, the motor connector with Hall is a large square, the 2012 Sirocco has round, small 3-pin connector.
