***THIS BIKE HAS NOW BEEN REPLACED BY WISPER***

hi, after reading this forum over the past week decided on a wisper bike, which was bought today.

However halfway though my 10 mile journey home the motor started making a loud crunchy grinding noise and seemed to seize.

The noise was audible in ped elec mode, louder inwhen the throttle was used and very loud when the derestricted button was pressed. The bike didn’t travel much faster than about 5 miles per hr (so it felt) and would not go up any hills. The back wheel was hard to spin and I can not make it spin back wards, when cycling I feel as if the bike is working against the motor making cycling very difficult, I ended up having to walk for most of the 5 mile journey home leaving me feeling tired, sore and very unhappy.

I have now fitted the computer and will do some tests tomorrow.

Does anyone know what could have caused this, and how it can be fixed?

This sounds like a failure in the orbital gears within the hub motor, but since you've just bought it, don't attempt any inspection or repair, just refer it straight back to the supplier, as it's clearly a serious problem.

Sorry to hear about this. You might think this a stupid suggestion, but if you slacken off the rear brakes, does the wheel rotate freely? If not it sounds like the orbital gears are some how out of alignment and a replacement rear wheel and motor under warranty.

Is the bike new or used Moon?? Whatever is wrong is clearly not a minor issue. David from wisper bikes has a clininc in the forum but i'm sure he will spot this and give some ideas. Sounds nasty though!!

Seized

Hi Moon

Just to reiterate my answer to your post and recent email.

There is no need for you to test the bike or try and fix it. The Electric Transport Shop will do that for you.

Let me put your mind at rest by saying, we will either fix the bike immediately or give you a new one. We have never had this problem in the past.

Was the battery fully charged?

Best regards David

Thanks :)

Yes it was fully charged all three lights were on when I started my journey and went down to 2 after about 5 miles, I think at the same time as the problems started.

The bike was working fine, sailing up hills and moving off quickly then all of a sudden there was an intermmitant grinding noise, then a constant noise and lack of power.

I've left a message with the vendor and will call again tomorrow.

Problem

Hi Moon

There is certainly a fault and it sounds like it is a motor problem. I spoke to the factory and your bike was road tested and QC'd so it is something that as you say, developed after a few miles.

My business partner Doug Gosling I believe is visiting you today to investigate, as this is such a rare problem we want to be involved.

Don't worry about getting it back to The Electric Transport Shop, Eddie will sort that out for you.

Please contact me if you have any difficulties.

Best regards David

I read the thread title and thought "Seized!? By who? Customs? The cops?"

I've just realised that my bike has a slightly different button set up to others I've seen and read about.
It has 2 buttons, one is derestricted, the other is power and has 3 battery lights above it.

when the power button is on I get pedelec and throttle at the same time, which was very helpful.

Is this a new design?

Hi Moon

Yes it is new, the last set up was a little confusing!

I look forward to meeting you this evening when I bring your replacement bike.

Best regards David

David from Wisper Bikes brought round a new bike today and it feels like a completely different bike. :D

I should have known there was a problem with the first one because as soon as I got on it i felt resistance from the motor and the pedelec power felt jerky and laboured.

However just having ridden the new bike its amazing, it rides like normal mountain bike until you press the power button then it just takes off...whoooshhh..

Many thanks to David at Wisper for bringing round the replacement and I hope you manage to solve the mystery problem with the first bikes motor...

Great to get you on the road!

Thanks Moon!

I hope you enjoy.

I am taking your old motor to China tomorrow and am having a meeting with the manufacturers, Bafang, to find out what went wrong.

And thanks for your kind comment John.

Best regards David
