Wisper 905 rain-induced powerloss

I got caught out by the heavy rain last night.

Apart from personally getting soaked, the throttle indicator lights started flashing, with intermittent power for a few seconds, before going off completely leaving me with a challenging few miles to pedal home.

This morning the bike is still completely dead, but I have now disconnected the battery and am charging it.

Surely the throttle is waterproof?

Any ideas, anyone?

Check all connectors to the controller, you should have removed the battery last night...check these connectors as well....

Wisper support is excellent - give them a call before you start any dismantling.

If you do start to investigate, start by checking the battery out of the bike. Use a multimeter to check the output.

Then disconnect the peripherals at the controller, leaving just the crank sensor. Add throttle if the crank sensor is working, then add the brakes, one at a time, checking for function.

But wait for Wisper to guide you if you can - give them a call. They are very helpful.

Thanks, I'm in contact with Wisper, who have advised me to wait for any residual water to dry up before trying again.

Good advice, and I should have made that clear - make sure everything is dry before you switch on.

Hi Andy, sorry to read about the problem, great idea to dry out with a hair dryer Frank!, However I would get the bike checked over by your local supplier as it is not acceptable for your bike to stop if it simply gets wet. I ride in all conditions and often leave my bike out all night in the rain but never experience such issues.

From your description I am more inclined to think that there is a brake cut out issue. If your bike is relatively new it will have plug and play components on the handle bars, if so disconnect the brake cut off cables and test the bike again, if it works you have found the problem.

Our later bikes all have diagnostics, when you turn on the bike the LED lights will light one at a time and then all go out. If any stay on it will pin point the issue, if you let me know how many lights remain lit, I can advise. However the best course is to pop it into your local dealer.

Please let me know how you get on.

All the best

David,

I have opened up the controller compartment and dried out the wiring - it didn't seem wet to be honest. I was sent a replacement throttle today (under warranty) and connected it (the current one is only a couple of months old) but still everything remains dead. I've disconnected the brake cut outs and still nothing. I can't think of anything but the controller but, like the throttle, it's only a couple of months old. I can't take it to a dealer as I purchased the bike second hand last October, since when I've spent more on replacement parts than I paid for the bike!

To be honest I'm thinking of throwing the towel in.

Regards

Andy

Are you getting a voltage out of the battery?

I recharged the battery as normal last night After around an hour the light went green which is around right for the journey I made.

If you are trying to diagnose the fault on your bike you will need access to a multimeter so that NRG can walk you through the tracing of the power circuit on your bike.
The good news, in some respect, is that you have a permanent fault which is far easier to find than an intermittent one, also general pictures of your bike and detailed ones of the handlebar/pedelec controls and a full description of your bike and battery would help i.e. its age ,model type, etc.

Hi Andy, there's no need to throw in the towel, we will get you on the road again. I didn't realise the bike was second hand so there are some questions I need to ask so we can help you further. I didn't think this was water related, it would be most unusual of this was the problem.

1. What exact model is the bike?
2. What are the fame and battery serial numbers? (Very important)
3. Are you using a bone fide Wisper charger? (Very important)
4. Was the first replacement throttle supplied also under warranty?
5. Are you now having the same issues as you were before the second throttle was fitted?
6. What other parts have you purchased for the bike? Are they all Wisper parts?
7. Which dealer are you working with to get the bike going again?
8. Do you live in Hackney? If all else fails I can recommend a local dealer who would be happy to give the bike the once over?

Thanks for your help on this Shemozzle and NRG! Good point re the images, that also would be very useful.

All the best

charging is not the same as checking you are getting a voltage out of the battery!

Thanks Andy for all the information.

I have spoken to Steve this morning and he has bought me up to speed

The bike I understand it is one of our older kettle lead models which will not have the diagnostics so sorry to mislead you on that. I also understand that you contacted the team last Wednesday, when they asked you to measure battery output. Unfortunately we do need to know if the battery is functioning before we can suggest any other remedies.

The guys at Wisper support are very aware of the situation and will continue to look after you.

Good luck with the project!

All the best

David

I have now acquired a multimeter. I've connected it to the battery pins directly and the 'bullet' connectors with the 'kettle' plug inserted (key switched to 'on', of course). The battery appears completely dead. How can a battery that took me 30 miles the day before just drop out like that? Is it possible the key circuit is dead?
