September 28, 20178 yr Hi My partner is enjoying the new wisper but found after doing a few rides together that she very rarely gets out of 5th and is struggling up some hills in 1st. So thinking of a smaller chainring maybe 36t and shorter cranks maybe 150mm ish as she is only 5 3 and not long of leg. I've Googled but really not sure what is compatible and where to get it from. Any help would be great thanks. Plus if I could keep the budget to about £50 with change for a night out at the cinema and a fish supper, even better.
September 29, 20178 yr Author Fair enough I'll ask at Halfords when it goes for the 6 week check up. By the way has anyone had an issue with momentary motor cut out uphill anywhere between 6 and 10mph?
September 29, 20178 yr Author Sorry I might have put this in the wrong forum, I will try and work out how to move it
September 29, 20178 yr The problem is that your gearing is too low for normal riding and too high for hills. You can't solve both with a new chainwheel. One will get better and the other will get worse. to solve your problem, you'd need either a double chainring or a freewheel with a bigger bottom gear and smaller top gear.
September 29, 20178 yr Author Thanks for your reply. Sorry that's confused me though. I prob didn't word it well. I thought be getting a smaller chainring it would make all the gears easier and ideally move down a couple. So that instead of currently topping out in 5th she would be using 7th and therefore at the other end it would leave her 2 extra gears that are easier than before. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

OK then, a smaller chain-ring will work. You need to count the teeth on the one you have. it looks quite big, so probably 48T. of it is 48T, a 42T one would probably be about right. Is your chainring held on by 5 screws to a spider or is it integrated with the pedal arm?
September 30, 20178 yr Author Hi thanks for sticking with this. Not easy counting those teeth but I think there are 44. The chainring is held on by 5 small bolts/screws to a spider.
October 1, 20178 yr Hi Jerry, thanks please give me a call on Monday, we will assist you. 07733226906 All the best, David
October 1, 20178 yr Recently as an experiment on a project bike, I brought a m-wave single chainset (38t X 170mm) and retaped them at 150mm http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/M-Wave-170mm-1-2-x-3-32-Single-Speed-Alloy-Chainset-Cranks-/152718252713?var=&hash=item238eb79aa9:m:m1kJfoVEWSRNA9zoSUatFUQ They worked fine and help me decide that I actually want 36t X 155mm. I've now brought this Miche double crankset and will remove the chain ring I don't need. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Miche-Young-Crankset/263228839109?ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&var=562224409750&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 It's worth noting, as you shorten the crank arm your pedals get further from the ground and you'll need to raise the saddle higher to maintain a decent leg extension then you'll find it harder to get your foot down If your still looking for shorter cranks, add "junior" or "BMX" to the search title, they tend to be shorter than most.
October 7, 20178 yr Hi Jerry, are you all sorted ? I've now fitted my Miche crankset and my M-wave crankset is now surplus to requirements. Fits Square taper bottom bracket and the arms have been shortened to 150mm with a 38t chainring. Are these are any good to you ? a tenner to your door

Are these are any good to you ? a tenner to your door That's a really great offer Gringo but I had a chat with David from Amps and he said he should be able to sort out a new chainring foc and some shorter cranks for a small fee. Just waiting to hear from him so will let you know if it gets sorted. Thanks
October 16, 20178 yr Author Big thanks to David at amps for sending me a chainring foc and some new cranks for a very reasonable price. Also got the rack adaptors but please forgive my stupidity there are just 2 bolts with black plastic flanges. What do i do with them? Hmmm answers on a postcard or this post would be appreciated. October 17, 20178 yr Hi Jerry, give Claud a call in Wisper Tech he will throw light on them! All the best, David
October 18, 20178 yr Author On closer inspection the 2 bolts are for the new cranks. So unfortunately the adaptor wasn't sent.
October 18, 20178 yr Has this now been resolved Jerry? If no please call Claud on 01732 762393 All the best, David
October 19, 20178 yr Author Hi David the 2 bolts I thought were rack adaptors are for the cranks and I'm going to fit tonight. However I didn't get the pannier rack adaptor so could you kindly arrange for one to be sent out please.
October 25, 20178 yr Author Well chainring and cranks fitted went on a ridiculously wet ride on Saturday and then battled with the wind on Sunday but the difference it has made is fantastic my partner is very pleased. Edited October 26, 20178 yr by Jerrymond
