Hi,

I have an old 90's mountain bike (big sentimental attachment) that I've stopped using since moving to Edinburgh because my daily commute to work is just one massively steep cobbled hill after another. And uniquely to Edinburgh, it's all uphill on the way back too!

Since I stopped playing rugby my fitness has declined to shockingly poor levels, I'm 18 stone and 6 feet tall. I don't mind cycling on nice flat level ground, but that isn't something that exists in Edinburgh so I'm looking for something that can help heave me up long steep hills

I have a £2000 budget, but that's a little flexible for the right kit.

I don't have a strong preference over hub or crank mounted although some of the crank mount units I've seen look like they reduce ground clearance. For hub mount, I think rear hub would be my choice.
I'd rather not had a 15mph restriction if possible either.

here's the bike I'd like to convert....

cheers,
Nick

If you still have a small level of fitness, the Ezee kit should sort you out. It can be derestricted to about 20mph. If you need more torque still, the 750w Bafang BBS01 should do it, or you can get a Rear 500w BPM kit from BMSBattery.com.

Hub-motors don't like to struggle on hills because they get hot. Each type of motor has a maximum SPEED (rpm). You can choose a motor with higher RPM for more speed, but then you must't go too slow up hills. As a general rule, the motor becomes inefficient and starts to heat up when it goes at a speed less than half of its maximum. 201 rpm = 15 mph.

When you have a powerful motor, you need a powerful battery to go with it. You can get the power from a bigger battery or from a special high discharge rate one.

You don't need to spend £2000 to get you what you want. £600 to £1000 should get you something really nice.

Hi Nick,

You could have an eZee kit for under 1K and have a chunk of change.

The eZee motor has all the grunt that you would need for Auld Reekie hills, my personal preference for tarmac and/or cobbles is a front hub motor, but we also have the rear motor kits too.

I understand that you are attached to bike you have, but with your budget you could easily buy a complete electric bike.

Check out what we have to offer at http://cyclezee.com/
