Where does wheel size "live" in the electricals?

Finding my (electric) wheels

I volunteer at a charity that refurbishes bikes for resale and the don't really want to handle Ebikes because of warrantee/liability issues so I have been rescuing a few bits and recently had the good luck to come across a Yose conversion kit with a good battery. It was on a bike with 26" wheels and I want to fit it to a 20" whhel foder. The speedo/ controll unit was broken but I have an LCD display which came from another bike, (can't recall its wheel size.) The display lights up with the logo "Emu" but I can't see any way of getting into a settings mode when connected to the battery with an error message as no wheel or pedal sensor connected. It has an on/off button and power up/down. If I connect to a wheel (9 pin plug), will it know the size and limit top speed accordingly?

OK - so you are going to get the motor out of the 26" wheel and then build a 20" wheel ? There will be somewhere to set the wheel size in the LCD but the motor will have a maximum rpm that may be too slow for a 20" wheel. e.g if the maximum unloaded speed on a 26" wheel was 19.5 mph it would still turn at the same speed in a 20" wheel so it would have a maximum unloaded speed of 15 mph and a practical assisted maximum speed of 13 mph

Often the display and the controller are a pair, and changing only one of them may not work.

No, my limited understanding is that Generally the controller unit will recieve the configurable aspects from the i/o unit on startup. Yose equipment being conformant to the eu/uk regs runs hobbled firmware which may restrict your access to any configurable parameters or simply ignore them, - changing wheel size is/could be the easiest way to overide a speed limit..

Also since only pedal assisted e bikes are conformant until, a pas sensor is plugged in and activated correctly you wont get the motor to run regardless of the speed/wheel size set.

Yose also sell 350w non eu/uk conformant kits.. and controllers/displays from that line are not running hobbled f/w.
the c500 lcd display that came with my yose kit has manual pdfs you can download (c500 display manual ebike .pdf) should get you what you want via google.

Where the firmware mods that limit us are made? i dont know, but i suspect its in the display unit only?? but thats just a guess, and not one im sure id back up with my own £££'s

To overcome the f/w issue the usual solution is to replace both controller and i/o unit with a new paired set known to work together and perhaps intended for the international market ;) Lots of options the forum favorite being KT controllers and displays, cheaper options exist just ensure a i/o unit and clear documentation are included.

There are two aspects to consider - speed limit and motor maximum speed.

As said above, the motor's maximum speed (if unrestricted) would be too slow for a 20" wheel. That's OK if you want to ride slow. At least it'll climb hills pretty well.

The speed limit is based on wheel rotation speed. If the controller limits it to 201 rpm (15mph 26" wheel), the actual limit speed would be 20/26 x 15.5 = 11.9 mph.

Controllers with LCD can be had from Ebay/Aliexpress for about £40. You can set them how you want, but the motor has its own max speed. You have to spin it up to see what it is - typically 260 rpm for a 26" wheel.

You can use a 26" wheel motor in a 20" wheeled bike and go at exactly the same speed if you run it at 48v instead of 36v. the motor doesn't care about voltage. The voltage just gives it a higher maximum speed, so if you find a 48v battery and controller, you can use them on the 20" bike with no problems for that motor.

Controllers and displays need compatibility to work , if the items come off totally different bike brands the they simply will no work bar turning on .
