What tool do I need to remove this big silver ring, after taking off the crank arm?

You need one of these! You'll also need it for doing up the BBS nuts too.

When we were kids, we used to whack those off with a big flat head screwdriver and whatever hammer dad had in the shed.

Obviously not the right way to do it but that has brought back some fond memories

Me too! And we used to in the trade as well. There probably weren't any proper tools being made at that time post war anyway.

I have the correct C spanner, but I can never be bothered to dig it out; however, I always seem to have an appropriate hammer and screwdriver to hand. Does that tell us something?

Always wear a nice thick pair of gloves if using this type of bb tool so when it slips you won't end up with bloody knuckles.
Next, when that has failed use D8veh and Flecc's technique just hit with bloody big hammer
