Maybe we should ask Victoria Coren Mitchell to re-format that as one of the conundrums on 'Only Connect'. There are some very clever people among those teams on that show.Islamic State - - ISIS - - EIIL (French) - - ISIL - - I.S. - - Daesh.

.....and the Toyota MR2 which had to be renamed for the french market...... Very good, but even worse!
Acronyms and names etc can be dangerous, this reminds me of when Ford in the 1970s designed the Capri out of a mix of Cortina and Anglia parts.
They coined the model name Ford Caprino for it, but just before the launch with all the glossy brochures and posters printed, someone discovered that Caprino was Sicilian slang for Goat Sh*t, and that was commonly used throughout Southern Italy. Cue quick change to Capri and publicity reprint.
N.B. Italian for goat is capra.

Indeed, and there's been others. Although not aware of the Caprino example, this website page lists many of them......and the Toyota MR2 which had to be renamed fro the french market.....
Indeed, the whole business of international model naming is highly risky. And the Skoda Fellatio....
