What Have I Bought??!!

Hi there,

I'm new to electric bikes and have just bought a secondhand wheel (with hub motor) which has contoller and throttle. It has no markings, branding or any identifiable markings except a part number on the hub which is 32LG014684 and the seller told me that it was taken from a Powabyke, but this cannot be guaranteed.

Now, I'm quite happy with elecrics and electronics and deduced that I have a pulse width modulated controller and am drawing up a circuit diagram such that I can wire it correctly but I have no idea whether the motor is 24V, 36V or indeed 48V

I wonder, and I know it's a long shot, whether anyone knows how I might identify what I have and determine what voltage the motor is?

My immediate plan is to try it with 12V then 24V and then 36V...to see how it performs, assuming it's 250W and should give me about 15 mph.

Like I say, it's a long shot but any info or advice would be most welcomed.

a pic would help but as far as I know all powabyke motors are brushed 36v 250w and plain aluminum with no distinguishing marks

That sounds like what I have got. No distinguishing marks except the part number which starts with '36'.

I've managed to find pictures of Powabykes which have a similar set up (controller on handle bar, short battery cable and a similar looking wheel) and, combined with your advice, am pretty sure that it's a 36V motor.

I started to fit it to my Specialized Rock Hopper this afternoon and to fit it inbetween my rear drop outs I am having to remove the drum brake, which I wanted to do anyway, but the hall sensor is mounted on this assembly so I'll need to remount the sensor and targets somewhere. I assume the hall sensor is there to ensure that the motor cannot be used unless the bike is actually moving to save damaging the motor.

Oh, and I've been quite impressed by some 7.5 Ah SLA batteries bought on eBay. I got 10 for £100 which will allow me to make a light short range 7.5 Ah pack and a larger 15 Ah for versitility. Nice!! Great fun!!
