Weird car drivers

My cycling experience has not been lengthy yet but as you do, you cycle on the road or choose to use the pavement if you feel it's not safe at the time.
We'll today going as close to the pavement as possible and no one behind me, I see an audi a6 estate coming towards me from the opposite direction, he is literally going on the wrong side of the road and swerves away the last minute forcing me to a complete stop, and obviously drives away...

Is this common in the UK? I thought people here were more aware of cyclists as cycling is quite common...

Not common my experience, the only time I've seen anything similar is when someone is overtaking another vehicle and has misjudged the space for that. But continuous driving on the wrong side I've never seen.

Perhaps the driver was from another country and absentmindedly on the wrong side of the road?

A common one is when the driver coming towards you decides he wants to park on your side of the road but sees no reason why he should tell you what he is doing.

The road wasn't that spacious and initially I thought there was someone behind me and trying to avoid him. But when I looked back that wasn't the case and he certainly had more than enough room to be in the correct side of the road. Driver looked blissfully unscathed by the fact that he had to move away the last moment which also didn't seem he was not paying attention in front of him...

Anyway. Life goes on..
