Weather woes

I feel sorry for anyone commuting home the weather is terrible here (in Midlands here at least) severe gale force winds and raining all day.. I've seen there's flooding warnings all over the place, especially in the Southwest where some houses have already been flooded... I hope everyone's ok! I'm thinking of moving to Shropshire to somewhere moral rural and villagey.. does anyone live up that way or know if it's an area for flooding?

Also the lack of anywhere to go or things to do would drive me bonkers. weather terrible here in London as well, but we make the effort to out every day for a walk (inspired by Flecc) it really helps, and my stamina improving all the time. you actually notice the improvement far more then with cycling...

Let's face it, it's been a dreadful cycling year where the weather is concerned. I just hope this isn't a continuing pattern for following years.

As for Shropshire, they have hills and my rule is never to live in the foot of valleys or on river flood plains. As long as you observe that you'll be safe. My home is 6 metres above the adjacent valley floor and 110 metres above sea level so rainfall or global warming sea melt are unlikely to trouble me.

That's what I've found Eddie, regular daily walking is a great fitness improver. Getting the same improvement from cycling needs some serious mileages, not easy when the weather is so bad and far more risky with wet roads and heavy traffic sloshing about.

Drivers driving like maniacs this afternoon in Gloucestershire cutting really close past me in rush hour just now and crazy gusts, headwinds and sidewinds nearly blowing my bike over (certainly making it impossible not to swerve slightly when hit by a side-gust). Ended up getting off the road and walking on the pavement for about half of my trip home. Really is very dangerous and I'm sure the accident risk will be way up today. Be very careful if you haven't set out already. Absolutely miserable conditions.

I live in Shropshire near river Severn which floods regularly. It turns a river into a mile wide lake at least once a year!

Follow Flecc's advice re valleys and you won't go wrong.

One of the biggest one day events in Shropshire and the biggest one day cycle race in the UK is the Shropshire Star Newport Nocturne, held every four years it is Britain's only floodlit cycle race.

Untill a few days ago, I had not worn my waterproofs for weeks. Yesterday was a bad day, the big problem being rain, it was so bad my waterproofs leaked. I still managed my daily ration of 10 miles unassisted pedalling though. Today, in Lincolnshire, there was no rain, but the wind was about 20MPH. Being retired, I choose my routes to suit myself, always headwind out, backwind home. I did not have to resort to the granny gear today, but it was close at times. I really enjoy the challenge of riding every day, and have only missed one day in the last two and a half years, due to illness. Wind tomorrow is forecast at 7 MPH, so an easier day.

so much water in the gutters, it was a choice between the pavement or middle of the road. I chose the pavement and an extra 25mins onto the commute home!

Talking of the weather.......

I have just had the very frightening sight of seeing my 88yr old mothers flight abandon its landing at Bristol at the last minute, then watched emergency vehicles scrambling ready for the next attempt......wind and rain horrendous.....really horrendous......

Anyway, shes safely here.....not at all phased, I was a nervous wreck, then the journey home wasnt exactly fun......guess what I am about to open !!

Nerves are shot to hell..........meanwhile shes relaxing watching Emmerdale....mothers eh.....they built them tough in her day. lol

I went out in the afternoon on the bike, 22mph winds with 43mph gusts. I didn't have too much trouble but the bike was struggling to maintain speed, especially on a short hill.

Phew glad to hear everything is ok! The weather has been terrible today..and I went out earlier to drop my post bags at the Post Office and my hat was nearly blown off the wind was that strong.. get the rose wine open ;-)

Lynda if that 2nd attempt had failed she would have landed in the next Country ie Wales . That crosswind at Bristol caused the Dublin flight to divert over here to Cardiff today . Sometimes it works the other way around , ours divert over there . Two attempts and a divert !

I didnt realise that Roger.....just as well I didnt have to drive to Cardiff......that would have seriously delayed my wine opening timetable.......phew......

I remember a loooong time ago I got on the wrong train in Bristol after visiting a uni gf and ended up getting a free tour of Wales compliments of Virgin trains! Seem to be on the train forever, I swear it did every station!
