It’s the ideal accessory for cyclists who demand the height of luxury on their camping trips – a fully-equipped, single-berth caravan designed to be towed by a bicycle.

The caravan boasts a full-sized single bed, 19” television, drinks cabinet and tea-making facilities.

The Environmental Transport Association (ETA) has unveiled the bicycle caravan during Green Transport Week to illustrate the efficiency of the bicycle. A spokesperson explained: “Using a car for short trips around town is as inefficient as a cyclist always having a caravan in tow.”

Battery boost

The caravan can be towed by most conventional bicycles, but its range can be extended considerably by hitching it to an electric bike such as the Wisper 706 Alpino pictured.

Cycle camping was at its height in the 1950s, but a renewed interest in camping over the last three years has seen cycle touring clubs attract record numbers.

Could it catch on?? ;) All the best David

I like the idea, but I'm not sure I'd like to be cycling down a road with a caravan on the back?! It would put a lot of strain on the bikes brakes downhill, probably a nightmare with sidewinds and I can imagine it would pi$$ off a lot of motorist like Mr Clarkson!!

That caravan is completely practical, my loaded trailer is about as big as that and I use it in hilly country. Here it is on my 14% hill, handbrake on:

It is hardlings a caravan. I would imagine that guy could not lay down in it. I have seen some decent sleeper trailers on other sites though.

I still prefer the good old fashioned tent.

These mini-caravans usually have a legs extension that opens up rearwards to allow full stretch sleeping. They really do have all the basics, but not an ideal place to spend an entire wet day.

On second thoughts, some people have just spent whole wet days in a single seat at Wimbledon with no roof over them and no 19" TV!
