They will be punished accordingly when they do eventually get caught by one kind or another of ANPR.

Remember that every vehicle not taxed and used has to be SORN* declared, and failure to do so is itself an offence. That means when they are caught they will have the accumulated offences for each preceding year not taxed or SORN declared.

In addtion to ANPR the DVLC have a program to highlight all vehicles on their database not Taxed or SORN declared or notified as scrapped to trigger police actions. I've no doubt they'll do this at an opportune moment if this situation continues.

This must have been used recently since they acted in summer in my area when we had some DVLA liveried trucks lifting cars, presumably due to no tax and/or insurance.

* SORN = Statutory Off Road Notification

The trouble is that finding and prosecuting them is now a lot more costly. Before it was quite easy, the traffic warden just looked at the windscreen and wrote out a ticket if necessary.

True, though those DVLA lift trucks turning up this summer caused quite a stir on my estate, so probably a good deterrent where seen acting. We don't seem to have any parking etc attendants these days in my area, possibly all part of the cutbacks. Cars routinely park fully on pavements totally blocking them, not just at night but sometimes all day too.

Anyway tax discs can be forged and passable. I once went through a police tax check in St Johns Wood, London with the disc I produced myself and it was accepted. I hasten to add the motorbike was taxed, but due to the discs vulnerablity to theft on motorbikes I always used a fake one in the holder. I actually told the officer afterwards and showed him the correct one in my jacket pocket, much to hs embarrassment!
