Current new bike came with 26" x 2.00 tyres as standard.
Going to replace them with Schwalbe Marathon Plus MTB's.

The Marathons come in two sizes for my wheel; 26" x 1.75 and 26" x 2.10

Would the 1.75 be ok to fit onto the current wheel?
I'm thinking along the lines of how car tyre widths need to be selected for a particular width of wheel. There is a safe range of tyre widths to use with each application.

Don't want to fit the 1.75, if it might cause issues with coming off the rim!

The reasoning behind wanting to fit a slimmer tyre, is that I'm hoping it would prevent less mud and s**t from being flung up past the mudguards.
True, or am I thinking too much into it?

I would have thought that it would stay on the rim better if the rim were wider. I had one blow off an 18mm wide rim. What about one of their Energizer tyres for the motor wheel. They're specially for electric bikes.

I did look at those, but I need a more aggressive tread as in their MTB version:

I can only answer for my old BH Neo Xtrem.

That came fitted with 2.1 tyres on 26" rims, and for a brief time of riding on the road with it, I fitted 1.4 wide slicks with no problems.

If you need a narrow aggressive tyre, perhaps also take a look at cyclo cross tyres. I fitted Schwalbe CX Pro's to the Haibike Cross with no problems. Having said that, I didn't run them at a high enough pressure, and suffered two pinch flats on one ride. They did have amazing grip though.

I see Schwalbe do an ATB version too:

Is this meant to be a compromise between a road tyre and off road?

yes... you'll be fine. You can run narrower tyres with no issues. I have run full on road tyres on my MTB wheels for training in the past so I can get used to the bike position, or use it on a turbo trainer.

You'll have no problems.
From the horse's mouth, thank you kind Sir :)

BTW, anyone else having problems typing Schwalbe correctly first time?

Go on, try it o_O

I'd be inclined to get the fatter ones, I put 1.75 marathon p!us' by accident on a city bike (bought cheap online without double checking width), potholes and vibration SO much worse than on fat marathon p!us'

What's your opinion on the puncture protection of this tyre?
