Tsdz2 install on an ICE sprint RS

The Tsdz2 was supplied by Woosh .
Fitting on a tadpole trike required the battery leads ,the remote control switches and speed sensor lengthening by 80mm
After removing the chainset , it was a relative easy job to fit the motor and make a battery mount.

The display mount and battery mounts were designed and fabricated half way up a mountain in Wales.

Next project will be fitting a second chainwheel to the unit. The 42 t chainwheel to the 9-32t cassette gives high enough gears but the mountains in this area needs a bit lower gears so hoping to fit a 30t inner ring.

You need so low a gearing with 20" wheels? One day I may put the GSM in the trike and was looking at 46-32 as a wise chainwheel option with an 11-42 wide range cassette. 32:42 will not get me up the hills around me unpowered so the option is never run out of battery. And in case of break down the "come and get me, I've broken down" option... Folding trikes help in this case.

I assume you have seen the open firmware project for the TSDZ2?

I'm primarily interested in it for lifting the pedal cadence assist limit - though I don't have a well functioning unit at the moment. I can see a higher cadence being useful on a trike where you can't stand on the pedals for that extra bit of power.

I have seen the software on offer , We will wait until the unit goes out of warranty first .

This unit is on Ken's Sprint RS trike and currently l am thinking " what's not broke , don't try and fix "

Next modification / upgrade could be to an ICE Vortex with a similar setup with a double on the front. I will try and get the one with throttle and brakes next.

No problems. If the cadence does become a problem then its possible to run a higher voltage battery to raise the cadence without making any other modifications(assuming you have the 36V 250 watt road legal motor then running a 42 or 48V battery will up the cadence at which assistance is offered from 90 to about 120 rpm).

Worth bearing mind in case it becomes a problem.

Have you found an ICE mine? :p Next thing we know you will be motorising a vélomobile!

We have just acquired another Ice trike , this time a Vortex , This time we are fitting a 48v tsdz2 with throttle and brakes and a 48v 13ah battery . The battery mount will bolt/ clamp onto the hard tail of the Vortex quite low down to maintain a low centre of gravity.
A third disc brake will be fitted to comform to EAPC regulations , At the same time of the conversion we will upgrade to bar end changers .
Our current work bench 1/2 way up a mountain in West Wales suffers from relief rainfall, but it does have stunning views across to the Gower . It will have to do until our double garage is built
Again the tongsheng tsdz2 unit with be fitted with a double chainset This will give us a bottom gear of 36f to 34 rear on a 700c rear wheel and a top gear of 42f to 11 .

Currently awaiting the arrival of the 3rd brake calliper and associated brake cables . The original handlebar furniture has been stripped off and the e- brake cables and speed sensor have been extended by 95 cm , leaving only the aux control panel and throttle cables to be extended.
The original chainset has been removed and the Tongsheng tsdz2 fitted with dual rings.
The rings are slightly further out than the original rings but with a little adjustment should change okay.

Stunning views on some of the cycle paths and from our garden .

More updates will follow.

That is very interesting that the front derailleur reaches far enough out on the TSDZ, it doesn't on the GSM. Easy enough to fix with an extended derailleur mount, I have the bits but am going ahead with rear motor. Gearing will be triple up front for the moment but I am interested in a 46-30 oval double with an 8 speed 11-42 cassette.

My dinghy is in final sanding and paint so the trike will be getting a little more attention in about 10 days time.

The vortex is complete , PITA most of the way , trying to complete an install half way up a mountain in a small village in Wales is not an ideal location ( apart from the views which are stunning ) even down to sourcing brake cables , Post to the area is not the fastest , we are going to invest in some spares , just in case .
Here are a few more photos and a photo of the view from the operating table.

I motorised an adventure FS and a Sprint FS. After using a Terracycle battery holder to carry the battery backwards, I no32675w place the battery on the boom in place of a bottle. I find the equilibrium of the trikes far better in turns

None of the trike manufacturers recommend fitting a middle and battery on the front boom , apart from putting a lot of weight in front of the wheels ( modifying the handling ) it will put a lot of extra strain on the joint.

Hum ...
Thanks to the extra weight in front, the center of gravity is more between the front wheels which improves stability in turns
The battery is not on the boom but on the frame ; it had 2 kg compare to a full bottle … the stress on the frame has nothing to do compare to the one resulting of a rider 20 kg heavier :)

The best place for the battery is under your backside but often there isn't enough clearance there. MarkS of electric trike fame has his slung off the back of his ICE trike seats. If I ever put the GSM in the front I think I'll make a battery holder that goes under the frame between the front of the seat and the T and has the same ground clearance as the bottom of the frame.
