I am currently looking around for an ebike, one of the considerations is towing a pet trailer. When looking at trailer sales sites I have not seen any specifically for ebikes and indeed one site said not suitable for ebikes. Has anyone any experience of towing a trailer with an ebike. The pet would be a 20kg dog.

Yes, plenty of experience of towing with e-bikes and most e-bikes can tow OK, the main thing to watch out for is the compatibility of the hitch to the e-bike in question.

All trailers are suitable for ebikes. It's just a matter of how they attach. Some attach to either one side or both sides of the rear axle. The 12mm axle and the 12mm nuts on a hub-motor mean that you will most likely have to modify something.

If it's a single-sided piece with a 10mm hole, it might be as simple as drilling the hole out to 12mm. If there's still no room for it, you can make an adapter, which is just a short piece with a 12mm hole in one end and a 10mm hole in the other, which you can bolt the trailer attachment piece to.

Some trailers use a clamp that clamps to the nearside chainstay. That can be inconvenient if you have a motor wire there or a side-stand.

Here's some pictures of trailer attachments. Whatever trailer you look at, you need to check out how it attaches, then think about whether that will work on your bike or how it can be adapted.

Crank-drive bikes are not nearly as problematic as those with hub-motors because they have more standard axles.

I tow a trailer with two of my bikes and use the CarryFreedom large has 80kg payload. As mentioned it is about getting the hitch attachment that suits your bike, axle end hitch are the most convenient. Most std 9mm hitches can be drill out to fit 12mm hub motors like mine in the pic #4 in the thread below.
The handy thing about the carry Freedom is that it takes about 10 seconds to collapse down to a flat pack for storage , axles are of wheel chair time that are quick release.
I use my as a simple platform base like in the pic or also have a a heavy duty carry box (630L x 440w x 380h which has a lid that can simply be strapped on for shopping or carrying smaller items.

No problem, I had to tow my last dog on long trips, ones greater than 10 KMS after she got a form of cancer in her front feet! And she weighed 35 Kilos!
I did not even really notice a loss of "distance" either, but I did keep the tires really hard to reduce resistance...
Nothing to it!
Though I did have to modify the trailer hitch to allow fitting in spite of the motor cables. 5 minutes with a hacksaw fixed that, but you have to plan the cut "intelligently".....

Our (very old) trailer that has a long arm to the seatpost does not work on our ebike with rack battery, even though it works with regular racks.

The one I have, has a unit that is held in place by the rear wheel axle nuts, on the LH side. I think this is the one I have, it works fine.Bike trailer hitch.jpg
Looking on the web, there are many systems nowadays! A lot of choice!
