I missed the hill climb event, anybody know how steep the hill was, reading the results only one panasonic powered bike placed, this being a giant revive in eighth place, did any kalkhoffs compete in the event, and how did they get on.

The Giant Revive doesn't use the usual Panasonic unit, it has a smaller much simplified and rather cruder unit, remote from the chainwheel, without the sophisticated Panasonic pedelec system and with less power. It's actually got more in common with the 180 watt Cyclone motor than the usual Panasonic unit.

Lafree and Kalkhoff bikes are at a disadvantage with speed events on gentle climbs, only gaining the advantage on much steeper hills. Basically they are about making very steep hill climbing easy, rather than making it fast on slopes.

The other point about the hill climb at Presteigne is that the first part is actually downhill, leaving the Lafrees at a distinct disadvantage with only 3 gears. I did the hill climb for fun last year expecting it to be much steeper but I was a good 400 metres behind (and exhausted from pedalling flat out) before I even reached the hill! My bike climbed the hill with ease but I was a little taken aback to overtaken by Pete on his Quando as if I was standing still:confused: Of course, I know more about the Quando's hill climbing ability now but I was well miffed at the time :(

Well if the panasonic powered unit used in the revive is less powerfull than that used in the lafrees and kalkhoffs,p.mustill must be bionic coming in eigth in the hillclimb, and placing around 12th and covering 20 laps including a stop witnessed by me to pump up his rear tyre in the main race (equall to any giant bike),or has his bike been modified in some way.

I think that's Pete's ability, though the bike may have been modified. The Revive is very much heavier than any of the usual Panasonic bikes. It's remote motor unit is a lower power spec requested by Giant, partly because the Revive was seen as a "take it easy" semi-recumbent, but mainly so that they could use a very small battery. As standard and for a given rider, it's at a disadvantage to the normal Panasonic powered bikes, and even more so against those with a high power mode.

You can get a second opinion with A to B's test, they were none too impressed with it either, remarking also on it's inferiority to the normal Panasonic unit. We also have a member with one who is unimpressed with it's performance.

One of the worst things about commenting on e-bikes is that someone will always challenge any performance statement and I get this in here all the time. Bikes can only be compared with a given rider. We went through this with the Torq 1 where half the forum said it was a rotten hill climber (true) and the others said it was brilliant on hills, simply reflecting their own riding abilities.

Anyone know if the nano-brompton was featured at the event. If so, what was its hill climbing capabilities?

Also any new updates on the amount of miles consumed on the nano brompton so far?
