Well, I've had my first ride on an eBike today.

Both my Sirocco CD and my wife's Santana arrived from Woosh at lunchtime today and I had no bother assembling them in less than an hour. As soon as my CD battery was fully charged I decided just to jump on it and go! A quick 10 mile round trip including around 700+ feet of ascent. No problem, and I haven't been on a bike for years, and certainly wouldn't have even attempted doing the same trip on a non-powered machine. My legs were a little stiff at the end although I was never remotely out of breath.

Now, as a motorcyclist, it all did feel a bit slow and the gearing meant that anything over 18mph meant a rather fast cadence. If it's an easy job to change the sprockets then that's something that I might do, although I may just leave it as it is as I don't plan on leaving Mrs Oldie eating dust on her Santana.

Sadly, on my downhill (fairly fast) homeward descent I had a blowout on the back tyre (possibly impact) and I had to limp home the last few yards. Rather than investigate the problem I simply put the CD in the garage and jumped onto the Santana. Very nice too. I actually preferred the riding position (well, at least for easy cruising) but the CD is better for the steep stuff, methinks. Yes, the Santana is a very nice bike and we're planning to get some practice runs in over the weekend. You somehow “feel” the motor a bit more and it feels quite powerful.

To be honest, I had presumed that the CD was going to have a bit more grunt than it actually has, but that's probably more of a consequence of riding 1300 cc motorcycles (they're quite quick) but I'm sure that I'll adjust to it very quickly. Anyway, it does it's job well so I'm satisfied.

Although this is not a review (not enough miles yet) I might make the following general points on the CD.

Front disc brake probably needs adjustment, or maybe it's just not that great.

Saddle is “firmish”, but should get used to it.

Throttle not really of much use to me as I prefer to pedal all the time.

Bike rides fine with no power.

Motor is quiet.

Gears slightly out but will adjust to get them perfect. Didn't detect any issue with changing up or down under power.

Suspension adequate although seat post spring probably not the most sophisticated.

In summary, I'm glad that we've bought the bikes and I think that they are good value and we'll certainly be using them quite a bit. It might take a few trips before the riding experience becomes intuitive and that's when we'll get the best out of them. Thanks for a good buying experience Hatti.

Hub motors are commonly a bit more powerful than crank drive ones. The complementary reasons are that hub motors, not having the drive through the gears advantage, need more power for climbing. Crank drive motors can be less powerful due to gearing advantage and having a bit less power protects the bike's transmission against any ill effects of having both rider and motor power through it.

Congratulations Oldie,

Looks like you'll be having some fun with those. I'm sure you will get used to the foibles. The CD will encourage you to put some effort in, but should give very good range. I ride a Yamaha FJR, but I just love ebiking, and its worked wonders on my health and weight.

It's so nice to go for a blat on the FJR, then ebike up the pub for a skin full. It always gets me home!:p
Godspeed!

Day 2. Purchased a helmet, two inner tubes and a puncture repair kit from Halfords in their 20% off sale. Popped in a new tube after finding the cause of yesterday's puncture - a very sharp thorn. Patched the old tube for later use. I also took the opportunity of recharging the battery, adjusted the brakes and bar position and pumped both tyres up to 45 psi.

Fancied a longer run today so attached some old motorcycle soft panniers to carry my repair stuff and pump, and other assorted items, and off I went. The bike felt even better today so I set off for a challenging ride through Glen Fruin, challenging because of some very steep hills and dodgy road surface. It was a great run and the long 1 in 4 at the halfway point was accomplished in first gear and level 5 assistance. No way could I have got up this hill, even as a youngster on my road bike. Says it all really.

Got back home 20 odd miles later and decided to head for the pub, a couple of miles away, for a lager. Lovely country Inn and they were happy for me to puff away on my ecig too. Bit of interest in the bike as well.

All in all, a lovely sunny day in the countryside, all thanks to my Woosh

Good route for a bit of enjoyable cycling. Did you go Faslane to Crosskeys or the other way round?

The other way round - halfway point was where the military track crosses the road above Faslane (200m elevation) and then retraced my steps. I was run off the road on a blind bend by a fast tractor...he he...but I didn't really mind as I just went into the ditch. Had I been in the car it would have been a different matter. They don't like people using their road and often intimidate cyclists and bikers, in my experience. Still one of my favourite runs though.

Today will be my wife's first go on her Santana - nice forecast again

Managed a 30 mile run today, half of it with a brisk headwind, and had a great time. Lots of sunshine :D

Now, 30 miles isn't any kind of world record but I would never even have contemplated such a trip on a normal bike before. Coming back still feeling fresh is a real bonus. Wonderful invention
