Swindon's secure bike parking facility is proving to be ....insecure.

So far this year, 18 bikes have been stolen from the secure parking.

Perhaps Swindon Borough Council should seek the advice of the Japanese as to what constitutes "secure bike parking". All that's needed is a big hole in the ground....and a lot of cash.

I always like to post this picture, its my idea of secure bike placement, and does give a powerful image of the locale.

Reading the article, they're not just targetting pricey bikes:
Probably nick whatever's not locked once they're in?

While it's true none of the bikes stolen had any great cash value, some folks find it very distressing when their sole mode of transport goes missing. One in particular, the Felt Vault BMX, belonged to a friend of a friend. This young guy lives in shared accommodation in the town centre, with nowhere he could keep the bike. As the cost of using the bike park is just a one-off £10 registration fee, he kept the bike in the park each night. Now most of us would simply shrug the theft off, but without going into too much detail, this young guy is a bit "sensative" so to speak...he was inconsolable when discovering somebody had stolen his little bike.

Before the recent improvements in security, there were two ways to gain access to the park. The most used is simply tail-gating a registered user in. The second method was using a pair of mini bolt-croppers to cut an arm sized hole in the fence and reaching through and pressing the gate release button. This can clearly be seen mounted on a 400mm square plate bolted to the fence.

The simple fact is, that bike park will never be "secure", and even better quality CCTV can only provide after-the-event evidence...not much consolation when you're legging it across town to avoid being late for work.

Sorry to hear of the distress caused to your young friend, Blew it: I know a couple of lads who would be similary upset, one being autistic & the other asperger's.

I don't suppose the thieving B^st^&£$ give a toss, but it might just nudge their conscience if they were confronted with the repercussions.

Personally, I think the Arabs have the right approach - Chop their hands off.

IMHO.

Blew it, I'd be happy to chip in if he needs assistance to replace it, doesn't look like you can get that model new but noticed they occasionally pop up on ebay.

Thanks for your kind offer, he now has some new wheels to whizz around on. The brand was actually of little importance, it was the sudden disruption of the regular structured existence essential for such folks that "threw" him.

Thanks again for your thoughtful gesture, very much appreciated.

Regards
Bob

Anyone know if the security issues with this bike lock up have been sorted?

I plan on doing some commuting into Swindon on my new pedelec, and need somewhere (near the bus station) to lock it up during the day.

Why are 'security' cameras so hopeless?
Even my Grandads Kodak box camera could take a sharper focussed picture

You've obviously not read the Pratchett book which says something along the lines of "In some cultures they cut the hands off thieves to stop them stealing again. Here they cut off their heads to stop them even thinking of stealing again!" - a bit draconian and not something I'd advocate, but I liked the logic!

There's a policy in China where the villain is encouraged never to be a repeat offender. Guess how?
