Stupid question - what gauge of cable and where do you get it?

Featured Replies

Hi all

Another newbie question here.

For a 36V 500W controller (S12S/P and CST motor both from BMS battery) what cable gauge should I run from battery to controller?

And from battery to lights? I'll need to run a meter on them when all the bits arrive but all LED based, most running 36V except for a single Cree T6 at 8.4V.

And what suppliers have you used?

Thanks

Is the equivalent AWG, 12 AWG? I am using the diameter of the wire (0.080") here to make the comparison.

14AWG is OK as long as you don't run it all the way to the handlebars and back. 12AWG is OK too, but thicker, so a it more difficult to solder.

I am thinking I will probably need to do something to run from the motor at one of the recumbent to the battery at the other end. I haven't gone out to the shed to measure it but guess around 1.5 metres of wiring needed. Wheelbase is 47".

Normally, the motor already has a lead to the controller, so you only need battery to controller, which can be very short.
what's wrong with cutting up an old kettle lead? you don't need all 3 cores but it's easy to find and robust.

I am going with a Bafang Mid-Drive which on my recumbent is mounted right up the front (the controller is built into the motor). That battery will be on a rack over the rear-wheel.

OK then, 12g if it's 500w or more, otherwise 14g

350W so 12 gauge it is and I am assuming that is British 12 gauge which of course is different from American 12 gauge. Don't you love standisation :)

Thanks
