Stolen charger - are chargers bike specific?

Sorry but as my name implies am not very knowledgeable where e-bikes are concerned.

My question is, I had my charger taken and wanted a quick replacement, I have only had my bike two weeks but my bike manufacturer said to me that the chargers are bike specific when I asked if I could buy a charger cheaper online, is this actually the case?
