:confused:When the mouse's away ... J absent from home for a few days - a History conference and Henry V at Stratford tempt her to venture south - I've stolen a short ride on her trike. How do 5 year-olds manage? Is it a left brain/right brain thing? The &4M+ thing has a mind of its own - 'Find the kerb and hit it!' No bruises on the trike, thank goodness, but I hope I stop trembling by the time she's home again!
I once, long ago, tried a motorbike and sidecar. Wish I'd remembered that debacle before I set off on the trike. Where did I hide the whisky?

What a difference a week makes! We've bought the latest Thule carrier - a sort of flat platform which juts out at the back of the car onto which the trike sits (very firmly strapped down); engage the tilting lock and drive to destination. Unload trike, making sure not to get trapped under it when unloading. Gravity is great - thanks, Newton. Dis-engage tilting mechanism, climb on board and set off for the coffee shop. No a problem. Sun shines, cake changes hands, return to car by round-about route. Tilting trikes rule the world. I wondered what the extra control on the handlebars was. It's the lever which controls the universe! Thanks, Bob.

PS - anyone know a simple-to-fit power kit for a Brompton?

5 year olds manage because they haven't ridden bikes,

To ride a trike you first have to put all thoughts of cycling out of your mind. You'll find it easier with only one hand on the handlebars, treating it like a tiller.

You push the handlebars the opposite way on a trike, so you have to make a conscious effort to do it instead of the normal counter-steering that you normally do. It gives the impression that the trike has a mind of its own because you try to steer it one way, and it goes the other. Once you understand what's happening, you can soon adjust.

I bet we get the normal "WTF" comments!
