They're probably all ok Hawkwind, and I wouldn't be surprised if some use the same innards as the more expensive branded ones. That's certainly been the case with some digital watches for years now.

At those prices they are worth the small risk.

Thanks again flecc :)

I guess that they all work by a magnet and sensor and not the old fashoined way now.

Got to go back to work now so i`ll have a good look later on and order one tonight.

Thanks once more :)

I bought a basic wired one from Halfords for £5.99 over a year ago, it's still going strong which is more than can be said for the first bike it was on, did have to relpace the battery after 6 months though which cost 99p.. I was gutted.

I tried a cheap wireless one, one downside was the expensive tiny 12v camera battery in the transmitter, the other downside was that it clocked up miles with the bike stationary, the fairies did over 70 miles one night. I suspect it may have been interference from mine and neighbors wireless networks but can't be sure.

I bought the wireless Topeak one from wiggle here and it works fine, but now I wish I had spent a bit more (now you can get them with inclinometers!!). I suppose it depends on what you think you will want (I didnt want and dont really need an inclinometer, but it would be nice to have one ;)).

Yes, they're funny these things, they all seem to be trying to outdo each other with the number of features offered. A bit like the mad period when wristwatches were offering rim scale slide rules, calculators with impossibly tiny buttons, and even radios or spy cameras.

Now that's one the speedo manufacturers haven't thought of, a forward facing digital camera lens in the edge! Snap what you're about to hit!

Looks very smart and better featured than my Cateye Velo 5, hawkwind.

The price is probably nothing to do with quality so much as the advertising budget of the Cateye products plus the 40% or more margin that cycle dealers enjoy.

Snap the 'devil' who just tried to kill you, or those moronic car drivers who cannot wait for cyclists who have right of way at traffic calming pinches.
I am going to take my camera out one day, practice riding one handed, and give local motorists a load of grief. Wonder how the cops will respond?

I must admit I've thought of doing the same Peter. Probably best with a digital video camera though, to get continuous "footage", like the police do it.

What's to know?

Hi, i know from the posts on the forum that a lot of members use speedometers/milometers.

I will be looking at fitting one and as i am a tight wad and no chuff all about them i would like to know if it is worth spending a bit of dosh on them or am i just as well going for something such as on here
eBay.co.uk - speedometer, speedometer Cycling, computer, Cycling Accessories items at low prices

Thanks again :)
What's to know about bike computers? Get one from where you can return it if it goes wrong.
Although some posters have had no trouble with the wireless variety, mine would not work with a gas powered engine sending out confusing signals. The biggest problem was doubled up speed and then half speed.
What I would get is one that displays average speed and trip time.
A nice little ego trip (or not as the case may be).
The Sigma 1106L, as on eZee cycles recently, seems good - easy to read display and zeroizing (unlike the Cat Eye velo 5). It does not have 11 functions unless you count the two languages and some other dubiously useful ones. 7 is nearer the mark. £19-95 from 'you know who' can be got a little cheaper 'out there'
for spec see:Electric Bike Accessories - Wireless cycle computers

The thing I 'Liked' about the Hong Kong ones on eBay was the shipping three times the cost of the goods - still looked cheap though.

LOL yeah, more and more dealers on Ebay are selling goods for less than a pound and getting their money back for the true value of the product by charging large p+p fees, probobly to reduce their fees to ebay.

I have seen goods from Hong Kong sell for 99pence with £35 p+p

I keep almost being tempted by this, then I could make videos like this,

DISCLAIMER: I obviously don't don't condone the riding in the video and I'm take no resposibility for the hail of adverse posts that will probably result, also if anyone "tries it at home" it's nothing to do with me.:D

The biggest neighbourhood watch (no pun intended) is Switzerland. :D
My God! That's a fantastic instrument. All that fun for just 100 quid.
With a little judicious 'reporting' one could get one's money back and more.
I have a digital camera with a movie function of about 20 seconds. Enough to catch 'em on film. Worth a try.
Trouble is the camera has rather a long 'wake up' time from resting.
Will certainly give it a go.
Thinking seriously on.
