Speed sensor interchangeable?

Are speed sensors brand specific? Could I use a generic speed sensor on my Haibike hardseven or do I have to use the yamaha specific sensor. There doesn't seem to be much to them and I'd rather spend £10 than £30 if it just a matter of changing connectors on the generic one.

A very good question, if it is still three wires one would say it should do but whether it will work is another thing.
