Sorry for title but it sums it up, on a longish ride today I found out my backside isn't cycle hardened yet, so wondered if for an occasional cyclist, whether people think a softer seat is better, or padded pants, I have the standard seat which came with the bear as I was considered a bit short for the ncx seat.

Thanks ....... Andy

It's a very individual thing Andy. I like a slightly soft gel seat but many find them worse and prefer to wear in a hard leather saddle like a Brooks, which once achieved can be very good.

So you may have to spend a little to try out a hard and a soft to find what suits you best. But you only finally know after riding any one over a long time.

go for the NCX, it can double the time you spend on the saddle. When you hit a bump, your back won't go up and down, the saddle moves backwards - that's the clever bit. Your back hardly notices the bumps and road surface irregularities at all.

As mentioned it is an individual fit. Bizarrely I have found the (rock hard) Spa cyles esk leather saddle with or without padded shorts to be the most comfortable saddle i've have ever had. Covered around 3000 miles since purchased in June, still some way to go to break in, but comfortable
