Hello Old Timer,
I'll run the risk of ignoring your red signature (about making a fool of myself) and point out my observation: that Rhododendron(?)-hedge, once its established, will probably do very well, judging by the other flourishing vegetation. And that has me worried. You see, from the photos, it looks to me like you've left yourself little room for when the time comes to trim the hedge. Don't get yourself run over...

Hiya
It` a laurel hedgeBTW:_0

My idea is to trim the hedge on the roadside back hard when it gets going and then move the stones in and that will give an extra couple of feet for two cars to pass.( they pass now but it`s tight) as far as room to work on the roadside after the rush hour morning and evening ( when maybe 20 cars pass:) there are times when nothing comes passed for 30 mins or more so no problem with traffic and I always put my beacon pout in advance. Like others throughout the area it`s not really to stop cars but more to stop massive tractors and combines from tearing up the drive. The local farmworkers are fine but during the busy times they call in contractors who don`t give a damn and a number of gardens in the village have been damaged that way.
The funny thing is that since we put the stones out, the traffic have gradually eaten away a bit of the opposite bank which has made the road slightly wider and eased things. You know what it is? now having been forced to retire from health reasons I`ve turned into a victor Meldrew:-0:)

Cheers

Dave

Dave,

Whilst I fully understand your thinking behind this, I'm a bit concerned about the safe exiting of your home without the benefit of the 'bell-mouth' incorporated in the original layout.

This won't be a problem with the high driving position of your van, but it might prove a little risky with the small saloon car. Perhaps you could install one those large convex mirrors on the opposite bank.

Anyway Dave, it's nice to know your still fit enough for a bit of grafting, and thanks for posting the photos showing your beautiful home.

Regards
Bob

Hiya Bob

The bell mouth really doesn`t make a lot of difference because the adjacent bushes tend to block some of the view and I don`t intend to let the hedge grow beyond the height where I can`t see over from the car. To be honest( like any cyclist) I always open both passenger and drivers front windows before pulling up to the road and use my ears as much as my eyes and just incase there is a runner or cyclist I always pull forward very slowly till I have a clear view.
There are people in our and other villages that have absolutely no view with a hedge right on the road, some have mirrors and some don`t and as you know we tend to watch out for that when cycling:)

BTW my wifes car is a Clio and quite low and when ever she goes out on her own I always make a point of seeing her off and walking out into the road to see if it`s clear for her.
