Wood is natures carbon fibre... A good few years back top end windsurf manufacturers started using wood laminate in place ( and along with) carbon? Kevlar/ dyneema weaves. Wood gives better feel/ flex and tough into bargain. A pain to repair tho...
There,s still nothing to compare with carbon fibre for stiffness/ strength to weight...not good with point loading or impact...but breakages ( if it hasn't been dropped,) can normally be traced to poor lay up..ie dry spots...
