Shouting swimming teachers

Featured Replies

Anybody have any idea why swimming teachers shout at their pupils?

Most Fridays i go for a swim at our local pool. There are several swimming teachers operating, usually with one or two pupils each.

They all shout at the top of their voices at their pupils who are maybe 1 or 2 metres away.

You can hear every word at the other end of the pool. I want to go up to the teachers shake them gently by the throat, and yell "They are here because they can't swim, not because they're deaf"

I can see a whole generation that will avoid water at all costs; not because they might drown, but because someone might leap out of the water and scream "KEEP YOUR LEGS MOVING"

Maybe they love the echo which is so prominent in swimming pools with their lack of sound absorbent surfaces.

But of course that sonic reverberation also accentuates the voices, so makes the shouting far more obtrusive than it would be in a more normal environment.

Since some swimmers wear ear plugs to keep water out of their ears, perhaps that might suit you to attenuate the offending shouts.

I find the same at any of our local "family beaches" ... it's usually the kids screaming and shouting these days but there for some reason it's the parents  if they're worried what their kids are doing then maybe putting down the can of lager and going over to supervise would be the responsible thing to do !!

It's no wonder I'm driven 2 miles fron the nearest car park along a dirt track to get some peace and quiet :p

Sunday morning 8 AM. No instructors, no kids, no swimming club officials (white trousers, clipboards, look that would stop a clock), no shouting!

Just people swimming at whatever pace took their fancy. Excellent, but I'm not saying where as there'll be queues round the block.
