Frame batteries are now becoming more popular and appearing in more kits and are mounted to the frame using the two water bottle mounting points on the down tube.
I wondered if anyone has attempted to add a second mounting point to strengthen the arrangement, as it does seem like a potential week point.
I thought of installing a riv nut on the seat tube and somehow creating something to hold the battery steady at the position shown below (haven't figured out how yet though).

Someone did crash and rip his bottle battery out of the frame. On mine, I added a rivnut to have three screws holding it. If you look at yours, theres room at the top of the slot for an extra one.

On my 09 Woosh battery holder I added a 3rd using the top slot and a 4th lower down just above the machine screw holding the empty controller unit to the main holder. On the Oxydrive one I could only get 1 extra fixing, I have had 2 off's with mine the last buckling the front wheel quite badly yet the fixings have held despite being a carbon frame.

I just bought some 2 inch wide genuine Velcro to fix a friends mobility scooter, it's really strong, I think it would be possible to devise a way to use it as a strap round the seat post and possibly top tube to help make the battery more secure.
around £6 for a meter may be worth a try.

After advice from d8veh, I added an extra couple of rivnuts to supplement the existing bottle mounts (as the lowest existing mount was unusable) and now have a very solid mount for the battery.

Can anyone recommend a rivnut tool and suitable size/quality rivnuts please? - maybe even a tool and a selection of rivnut sizes, preferably uk based.
Buddy skidded on the moss on paving today and uprooted the battery holder from the frame - luckily the extra support provided by the velcro straps idea above prevented something more serious!

You don't need a tool, just two metal strips with 5.5mm holes in the end. If you've ripped out the 5mm rivnuts, you might want to think about repairing them with 6mm, which use a bigger hole.

  • Drill the right size hole
  • Put the riv nut in
  • Put the appropriate screw through the holes in the strips and bring it to the rivnut
  • Hold the rivnut down with the strips while you tighten the screw
  • If the rivnut turns, stick a screwdriver between the strips and lever them apart
  • Tighten the screw until the rivnut is fully rivetted
