Hi all,

I'm off to the hospital on Friday to orthopaedics as I'm pretty beaten up (knees and back) . When i purchased my bike the chap who helped me said don't go diving into a saddle use the one on the bike and see what you think ? i picked a saddle out he told me this was for a cruiser style bike ? I did read on the site that someone had a rese and muller bike for sale and he was keeping his favourite saddle a Brooks saddle which looked very comfy. Any recommendations ?

What is the most comfortable bicycle seat?

  • Planet Bike A.R.S. Classic Bike Seat.
  • Schwinn Comfort Bike Saddle.
  • Selle Italia Diva Gel Superflow Saddle.
  • Bontrager Ajna Pro Carbon Bike Saddle.
  • Bikeroo Universal Bike Seat Replacement For Seniors.
  • Brooks England Cambium All Weather Bike Seat.
  • Fabric Scoop Radius Elite Bike Saddle.

Most will find it personal what may suit there sit bones.
Brooks are regarded well but at a cost.
Locally on my town bike I have a charge spoon for comfort but tried it on a long ride and it became not so.
Other wise I use lidl saddles which are good value and can ride 160k before I get any real discomfort.

Regardless of type - now that I have lost over 3 stones in weight, all bike saddles are more comfortable... but I use a cheap wide sprung saddle from Amazon, angled so that my weight rests mostly on the back. The only time that became painful was when I carried an extra 32kg in a rucksack last week, even though most of the time, much of the weight rested on the saddle.

I have mentioned on this forum in an earlier query about saddles, that I use a nose-less saddle. It takes a bit of time and trial and error to get it set correct for the individual, but have found it to be the most comfortable saddle I have ever had.
The main reason for its comfort I describe for us gents "it protects the parts other saddles do not" if you get my meaning.

I Agree, two of my bikes have the trekking saddle from Lidl (£8ish) also available elsewhere for a lot more £’s, look for the name “medicus”or”wittkop”. The thinner one I haven’t used and the widest type went back to the store after only 1mile o_O
on a third bike I have an Electra cruiser saddle, it’s really comfortable but doesn’t allow good leg extension when used on a conventional bike (it’s fine on my cruiser though )
I did once spent a lot of money on a Brooks and likened it to sitting on a concrete wall. After buying it someone said “it needs breaking in, given it a few hundred miles or so and it will be fine” I said billhooks to that and brought a Lidl saddle ;)

choosing a saddle is like choosing a girlfriend/partner, only you can know what’s best for you :p

The main reason I have my wide bike saddle angled acutely so that nothing touches my perineum, is fear of this ever happening:

Have you considered a saddle with a cutout ?

Also there seems to be a number of roadie saddles designed with your problem in mind. I expect doing 150km would cause a lot of pressure in that area. The 'reprieve' model is touted to be good for relieving pressure.
Check out the "Why our saddles" bit.
