Recently, I bought a new bow for my fiddle. I wanted to try a shorter than normal bow, to see if it was easier to use. I knew it might not work out, so I bought a cheapie from ebay. It was of surprisingly good quality, but for me the balance was wrong, so I decided to return it. The cost was £6.68 including shipping by Royal Mail. The deal was that the buyer paid return shipping. I wrapped it up in the original packing and took it to the Post office. They told me it would cost £10.40 ! I do not know what the seller paid in Postage, but it must obviously have been a lot less than £6.64, as otherwise, how do they make a profit. I put this to the PO staff but their attitude was take it or leave it. They said it was on account of the length. I pointed out that it was the same length as when I received it. Incidentally, I posted a tent recently, which was quite a bit longer and at least 100 times the weight. The postage was seven quid. Go figure.

Shipping would have been £2.70 (approx) by MyHermes or £4.74 by Collect Plus. Who uses the Post Office these days for such things? For both those couriers, you can take your package to a local drop-off point that is normally nearer than the Post Office, or for a few pence more, MyHermes will come and collect it.

For £6.68, I'd not even waste half hour of life my even thinking about it.

I'd chuck it in the next charity shop when in one and move on if it were me.

£6.64 is not a lot of money or it could be seen as a lot of money. One`s point of view will depend on one`s financial situation. I wanted to return it so that it could go to someone who will use it. The thing that baffles me is that it definately arrived at my door via Royal Mail , and it had a Royal Mail "Tracked" sticker on it. So my real question is, why did the seller get cheaper service from Royal mail than I get?

I think they may have what we'd call Trade Terms in other fields, basically better terms for regular customers who give an ongoing revenue flow.

A bit like having an account with a courier company.

Flecc, it makes sense what you say, and I suspected that that might be the case.I took the parcel to a different Post Office today. Initially they quoted about £10.50. I protested, and they said that if we classed it as a "tube or roll", as it was long and thin, they could do it at £3.99. Notice that they did not offer this option initially. I decided in the end to give it to a charity shop that supports Boy Scouts.
