Have a read of this recent thread -

I have found open street maps to be the most useful map for cycling as it shows cycle paths (blue dotted line) and bridleways (green dotted line). You can find it on several mapping apps.

https://m.cyclestreets.net/ Has a good automatic route planning option

http://www.iplanmyroute.com/ Good for planning your own custom routes

http://www.viewranger.com/en-gb allows you to download map tiles for offline use

I had the same criteria in mind so the first thing was to go onto the council website and see if they do any cycling maps... the ones I got from the councils in my area were superb... I got eight superb maps for free from Northumberland down to Durham. We are fortunate to have the C2C route local to me but it mightn't be much use to you as I don't know the area you need routes for!

Just use Google maps in your phone. Click on the menu and select "Cycling". It then shows all the cycle paths and routes, and uses them to navigate.

I found that Google doesn't always pick up the cycle routes it was always telling me to turn around when on a cycle track that ran adjacent to a dual carriageway and was attempting to force me on to the dual carriageway

Maybe it's because I live in a rural area

I use a garmin edge 520 and use garmin connect to create routes...it works pretty well, and saves flattening my phone battery all the time using google maps....and its more cycle route friendly

Did you have it set to "Cycling"?

Yes, I got it because it should come into its own when I move house. Ive already plotted routes out using google earth and connect, so pretty confident for my first commute into work
