Thanks you. I'd like to get a wider rim. 32mm does seem a bit narrow...

How do I know if a rim is welded? Thank you

I think he is going to fit a motorcycle tyre to his 16" rim. I like the idea.

Guys, the reason it needs to be smaller is because of the way rim & tyre are measured.

On bicycle, the size of a tyre is measured from the outer area. Here's the size of a 26" bicycle tyre:

But, if you compare to motorcycle tyre, size is measured from the inner area, so a 19" tyre/rim would have an outer area of 25":

See references here:

The reasons I'd like to change to a moped tyre are:
- Avoid flat
- And increase mileage. My current big apple tyre give me about 2-3 months of riding time before needing to change it (about 2000-3000 miles), which is annoying. With the moped tyre, I would only change it once a year as it is quoted for 12000 miles!
- So it would last longer, less puncture, be stronger and ultimately way cheaper on the long run

I just value reliability and maintenance free bike more than anything. Is there any bicycle tyre able to match that?

Thanks for the explanation cwah, I guess it's a case of watch this space.
You could of course just go the whole hog and get a Harley:D

Yes... but again space problem. Remember I'm parking my bike inside my flat.

If I leave a moped outdoor every night it's going to disappear within a month. 2 of my flatmate had their moped stolen :(

Hi cwah, but how is it possible to fit a 16" tyre on a 20" rim:confused:
In any case what would be the point advantage of fitting what is in effect a motorcycle tyre to a bicycle?
Motorcycle wheel and tyres are a different size to bicycles.A 19" motor bike tyre is near enough the same height as a 26",they will not go on each others rims though.I'am not sure if its all (see endless sphere fourum)16" motorcycle tyres fit all some/all 20" bicycle wheels. If you can find a 2 ply tyre that would save some weight. They can give more grip and they have a E mark.

My camper van has 8 ply tyres. Its the number of strips of rubber used in the construction.I read about them on the 19 " motorbike wheel thread on es.That has info on conversion washers for using bicycle spokes with motorcycle wheel rims.

I finally managed to take time to transferring the spokes of this motor:
http://www.leafbike.com/products/diy-bike-conversion-kit/20-inch-electric-hub-motor-kit/newest-20-inch-36v-750w-rear-hub-motor-bike-conversion-kit-908.html

To this rim:

When I was relacing the wheel, I noticed the spokes holes were too small for the nipple to fit. (13G). So I decided to drill with a M5 bit to make a larger hole:

Then I decided to do a radial lacing of the motor into the rim:

While trying, it seemed that my spokes were too short??? I couldn't put all the spokes on the holes. Have I done something wrong?

Are they too short??? What should I do?

Thank you

if the new rim is bigger than the one it replaces, you may need new longer spokes. can you measure both?

Not wanting to teach you to suck eggs, I suspect you know this already Cwah and probably didn't bother, thinking that it would be ok :(.

You should have measured the ERD on both rims to see if they were similar. Sheldon Brown's site recommends using 2 old spokes cut to the same length with the nipple threaded but not all the way, inset these opposite each other and then measure the gap between the 2 spoke ends then add this to the 2 spoke lengths to get an accurate ERD. Other wise measure carefully the internal rim at a couple of places and add 5mm to allow for the nipple head and rim thickness.

Alternatively have you screwed the nipple on to far to start with thus not leaving enough thread for tightening/tensioning once all are threaded on.

Thanks, I finally decided to do all the measurements properly. Here's what I got:

http://www.wheelpro.co.uk/spokecalc/

It seems that my spoke is too short as I need 78mm:

Any idea where I can buy 78mm (for radial lacing) 13G spoke delivered in the UK for decent price? Can't seem to find seller doing such a short spoke length on ebay.

Thanks
