Hi all

Love the site! Hoping someone can help with a replacement battery (or fix existing) for 48v battery on a Xipi kit. I can buy a battery obviously but don't get the connections etc - this has an rca to charge for example and a legal/non.. switch on the throttle. Battery has been a real pain since I've had it - sent back three times as power would just die. Puff of smoke last week and nasty smell - still reading 30v tho? Vendor not interested in helping with repair or replacement - any advice much appreciated....

Which Xipi kit do you have? Is it a geared motor or a direct drive. You can use any 48v battery that you want as long as you don't mind changing a couple of connectors. Have a look at BMSBattery.com

A puff of smoke and a nasty smell sounds more like a capacitor has blown either in the charger or the controller, not the battery.

blown BMS? the 30V reading looks like the output FET has gone.

Thanks for this and the link. It's 1500w motor - 2 yrs old - direct drive I assume. Nasty smell is from the battery - can still smell it up close!
Think I would need a tech to run all the wiring - I don't get the 4xPowrpole pak plug etc from the existing controller to battery - and all the spare stuff coming out of the contoller!
Thank you..

Thanks for this - I get BMS but FET?
Cheers

Hi Rob tell you what to do, inspect over the motor thoroughly and if all is sound, 'GET RID OF EVERYTHING ELSE' and start a fresh by asking advice from anyone of the technical guys on here to get you started. You do not want to be messing around with Lipo battery cells. I hope that you have the money to do this project. You are in very good hands now Rob, all the best.

FET (field effect transistor) is the switch that connects the minus terminal of your battery pack to the output port on the BMS, the plus terminal of the pack is connected directly to the output port and normally fused (25-30A).
Make sure you set you DVM to DC, measure the voltage at the output port again. If you see 30V then it's a sign that the BMS has blown, more specifically, the output switch is gone. It's repairable but you'd need a new BMS. d8veh is the battery expert on the forum. Post a couple of pictures of the innards of your battery for us to confirm the diagnosis.

I think we need some photos of your bike and at least the outside of he battery because Xipi changed a few things over the years.

Were about are you? Perhaps a forum member lives nearby.

The thing that worries me is that batteries don't go up in smoke for no reason. If you buy a new one, it might immediately go the same way.

The most likely reason that the battery is at 30v is that the BMS has switched off the output. It's not necessarily blown. There might have been a short somewhere in the cell-pack that has drained down a cell-string.

pianosold has a 48V battery, the LVC sould really be round 38V-40V - 30V is too low to still show up at the output if the BMS has not gone. He could be reading it with the tester set to AC though.

When the BMS shuts down, you often get leakage charge on the terminals. On a 36v battery, it's typically in the range 18v to 25v. You can't draw any current from it. It's not the same as the pack voltage.
