Puncture Proofing

I've been having terrible problems with a puncture on my 20" Schwalbe Big Apple tyre. After fixing 3 times I finally replaced the inner tube only for that to go flat as well. The original puncture was a tiny sharp stone embedded in the tyre which I removed. There is a very small slit in the tyre (about 1mm). I had checked the tyre carefully and could / can find nothing sharp on the inside. On reading another thread I'm thinking perhaps the tyre is getting pinched in this tiny split. Does this sound possible? Should I can the tyre as well?

Also, has anyone tried 'bluetubes' to prevent punctures happening in the first place?

Be interested to hear if they are as good as they claim as avoiding punctures for my new bike hire business would be fantastic news. Bike Higher | Electric Bike Hire in Devon

Well I just had a terrible blow out on my rear on my Mezzo and that was not caused by a puncture, but due to a tyre and inner tube change on a new conversion.. I'm pretty sure either the inner tube got damaged during fitting or got trapped and a pressure bubble built up and burst. The inner tube was literally torn in half when it gave out! I had some slime in them and I think that temporarily fixed a problem but also may have contributed to the problem of the blow out. I don't think slime can be relied upon as a puncture protection measure..it's more an emergency measure to get you back home so you can get the inner fixed or replaced.

I think you have to be very careful when fitting your inners in the first place to avoid these problems, make sure you inflate it a little first before you put it in and make sure it's not trapped and check for any foreign objects carefully and signs of the rim tape coming away or anything trapped under it. I didn't do that. On small wheels (16" especially) its even more of a problem getting inners lined up properly and avoiding getting them trapped due to the tight fit.

Just like with diseases, so it is with punctures, prevention is better than cure. For good puncture resistant tyres I think it's well worth investing in Marathon Plus tyres as these seem to be the gold standard against punctures..even a drawing pin or thorn won't puncture those. When you think about it, you might spend twice as much as a normal tyre for them, but it's money well spent on an electric bike for that peace of mind, especially if you travel longer distances where you might get stranded and a roadside repair would be difficult. I've had my Marathon Plus on my 26" for 2 years and not had a single puncture after riding over glass and all sorts of terrains.

That said, there's always a trade off to be made with tyres..and if you're riding Big Apple I imagine you like the cushioning they provide for a lack of suspension? Marathon Plus are much more rigid tyres that work better at high pressure.

Its possible, so fit a puncture repair patch on the inside of the tyre to cover the split.

I doubt the small split could pinch the tube, but what does sometimes happen is the the small stone that caused the puncture fragmented and a part is still in the slit. Under pressure when ridden the fragment can be pushed into the tube. I can remember a couple of occasions getting caught out by this when in the trade and repairing lots of customer punctures. To clear that possibility means pushing a small probe through the original hole to make sure it's clear, preferably doing it from the inside.

I'll try both those suggestions before replacing the tyre. Thanks.

Have you come across bluetubes?

I have no knowledge of them. Solid tyres are an automatic failure due to them being unable to provide differential vertical and lateral suppleness. The blue tube idea will be better in the sense that the tyre will still provide those essentials, but having only one "pressure" may prove a disadvantage for some, variations of rider weight, bike weight and what is carried on the bike mean that only one combined weight will be suited. Like solid tyres, fitting will be much more difficult since it will not be possible to employ the opposite rim-centre depth to get tyre beads over the edge of the rim. I can foresee some of the tighter fitting tyres being impossible to use.

I use the Giant thorn resistant tube and they're an excellent product. They are much thicker than regular tubes (more like a motorcycle tube) which is the thorn proof bit, plus they stay up for ever. What's more, on a quick google I see jamescycles have them at a ridiculous price right now. link

Hi electric_avenue,

The Giant tubes are a very good price, just a pity they don't have a wider range of sizes.

For anyone who doesn't know just how giant the giant tubes are, here's a pic one still in the box (my bargain set arrived today)
Assume they have a long valve? Could not see if it said that on the specification. They look good!

Yea was rather shocked by the size of box when mine arrived. I reckon 3 normal ones would comfortably fit in same box.

Now have one of these Giant inner tubes inside a Marathon Plus MTB Tyre on each wheel of My NEO Xtreme. Upped the weight of each wheel by almost a Kilo but other than also filling with slime I reckon they are about as puncture proof as can get without going solid (some areas now have 8mm of rubber and tube to get through).

Just need to wait till weekend to see how they perform.

If you get a chance to use them on paved roads at all, let us know how they do on that ? I inevitably wind up cycling on road to the places I want to go off-road and it's still a toss-up between these and the Tours.

Sometimes you wind up riding most of the time on something built for harsher conditions just so they are there for the times you want to play ... unless you get an Extrem and a Cross so you can just lift a different bike :p

Will Do. I have a local route that I will ride the xtrme and the cross around this weekend (weather permitting). Mix of pavement and Canal tow paths so should give me a good idea of pros and cons.

How did you get on with the tyres, GaRRy ?

High pressure solution

As no one has explicitly mentioned pressure yet, it should be added that keeping tires fully inflated is the most effective way to avoid punctures.

Does pressure have an effect on thorn punctures? I run mine at 50psi (26x1.9 schwalbe land-cruisers).

I've had a flat every time I've ridden a local trail lately - every one has been a stab, not a slit, just at the edge of the rolling surface of the tread. 2 had a thin thorn ~ 3mm protruding through the inside of the cover.

There's a couple of stretches where the hedges have been chain-flailed, so I'm presuming that's where I picked them up.

Hedge cuttings are a menace regardless of pressures and tyre types. Blackthorn in particular with it's long thorns is capable of penetrating even through the thick under-layer in Marathon Plus tyres to cause a puncture.
