just had another disaster with my pro connect disc, same problem as last time. motor sounding noisy as if chain is not alinging properly, eventually shunt from motor when climbing steep hill ,chain and rear gear mechanism snapped off, the first time this happened the cable from the gear shifter was pulled out, cost me £40 for replacement of new gear shifter, also when happened second time i was on 3 day tour 15 miles from nearest town, in cold conditions, luckily a driver with a trailer stopped and gave me a lift. does not give me confidence in touring with this bike, i have seen threads on pro connect disc with problems with chain alingnment, 50 cycles have been informed, awaiting reply

Sorry to hear about your drive failure.
In the past my chain has come off a few times preceded by a grating noise.
Fortunately the only damage was bending the motor chain guide which was easily fixed.
I've always been a bit lackadaisical with chain maintenance on all my other bikes but apart from once snapping a chain, with a clumsy gear change, I've never had a problem.
On the Kalkhoff however, I now always keep the chain well lubed and, touch wood, haven't had a recurrence for ages.

I have a pro connect with derailleur gears, and have covered some 7,000 miles in the past 2 ½ years.
The most frustrating thing about this otherwise near perfect bike is the chain crunching noise from the drive cog/idler whenever the chain is dirty and wet. (sometimes even just water if it is very wet on the road)
I wonder if this is a similar issue? I commute part of my route on an old railway line that has been graded so gets pretty dusty, chain gets mucky, but I only have a problem when it starts to rain, it seems a combinations of dirt and water probably reduces free movement of the links.
I had the exact same problem with a new chain and cogs, I thought I would overcome the problem by using one of the dry lubricants, PTFE based but this caused the problem straight away in the dry.
The only solution I have found is really thin oil and regular chain cleaning, I dread wet days!!
Took to carrying a can of 3 in one oil with me and whenever it started a quick oil would usually do the trick until I got to my destination.
The new impulse drive looks to be ideal to overcome this, but sadly I want derailleur.
NuVinci would do but not a lot of choice, may have to buy a mustache!
Good Luck in sorting it out

ok thanks for replies, but don't know what is causing the shunt from the motor to snap chain and rear gear mechanism , twice when climbing steep hill?

Can you describe what you mean by a, "shunt" from the motor a little more clearly please? Do you mean that it feels as though the motor is snatching at the chain with short bursts of power?

yes, I think thats the best way to describe it, but that burst of power is enough to break my chain, pull out cable from gear shifter, and snap off rear shifter mechanism.

I can understand how a sudden snatch at the chain could break it, but I would have thought that it would need to be a very severe pulse of power to do that, perhaps more that the motor is capable of delivering. Also, I can't see how that sudden burst of power could damage the gear change mechanism ( I assume that's the deraillure arm), because that's on the non-tension side of the drive.

Are you sure that your chain is in good, well lubricated condition? My chain started jumping recently giving the impression that the motor was slipping. It turned out to be a stiff chain link. A stiff link might snarl up the deraillure arm and damage it .

your description of the problem you are having sounds like a design and or manufacturing fault. as the bike is still quite new and i assume in warranty, probably best bet is to get it sorted soonest at dealer/manufacturer.

Sounds like the same thing I had with my C8. Eventually I tracked it down to play between the motor drive sprocket and the splined shaft. I bodged up a shim from the bottom of a Coke can and, voila, silent running.
