Kimberly Cheatle, Head of the US Secret Service said today when asked why no secret service were on the roof that Crooks used to shoot at Trump,

"That building in particular has a sloped roof at its highest point, and so, you know, there is a safety factor considered there, that we would not want to put somebody up on a sloped roof, so the decision was made to secure the building from the inside.'

about 6 months ago, the subject of what would happen if an attempt was made to kill Trump was discussed among top MAGA activists.

It's 'elf and safety' - too dangerous to put a man on the sloped roof.

I just heard the female head of the secret service say so on the Today Programme. The quote is in that link above.

No conspiracy theory needed. EVERYBODY knows that Presidents in America get shot at. There have been plenty of them who were hit by assassins. No surprise at all that people discuss the potential. It is an obvious fact and anyone could quote an example for any previous President, had an attack occurred.

As the IRA said after the Brighton Bombing -

"We only need to get lucky once. YOU need to be lucky all the time."

They left open an opportunity by cost cutting and health and safety taking priority, and the loser, would be assassin, climbed up, and began shooting.

So people saw him in the two minutes before he began firing. Were the local police who were securing that area, even able to talk directly to the Secret Service? I bet they were not even on the same radio frequencies. I bet the Secret Service comms network was reserved to them, and not the local cops who first saw Crooks after a member of the public spotted him.

There were only literally seconds to stop him once he climbed up on that roof at the back of the building, and there should only have been one security system doing the job.

Different services are allocated their own frequency and encryption for good reasons.

And in this case, that difference allowed the sniper who ultimately shot Crooks to be unaware of the threat long enough for the loser to get off six or seven shots, to wound Trump, kill a bystander, and critically injure two other people. The handing over of part of the critical area to local police who can not instantly communicate with Secret Service command, is a critical flaw in efficient security.

To be fair though - it must be an absolute nightmare trying to protect a figure like Trump in a situation in which thousands of members of the public - all potentially armed have access to an open air site like that and allowed to get near the potential target. The potential for acts such as Crook's, or equally dreadful, the potential for an agent to misinterpret some innocent, weird situation and shoot a harmless fan is high.

EDIT:

I think it might happen that open air events like this are not so common in the future. You can control who gets into a building and search all entrants. The potential target is only exposed as he gets out of an armoured limousine and steps rapidly into the building, but an outdoor event over a large area is far more dangerous.

Kimberly Cheetle will be out of her job within days.

I think there is more to the story. The Crooks family is supporting Trump, according to neighbours and those who knew the shooter. He wore a bullet proof vest and appeared normal to his work colleagues so he probably reckoned he'll do the shooting and escape.

He's a loner nutter.

What more to the story can there be?

The profile fits almost all of the US mass shooting sprees and has done for ever and a day.

Narcissistic, sad, socially inept loons do this all the time.

It is possible that he was setup to do the shooting believing that would guarantee Trump win the election. Maga activists such as Alex Jones discussed the possibility 6 months ago.

You amaze me....

He fired six or seven shots. One of the bullets passed through his ear three inches from the centre of his brain. Others hit several other people.

Funny way to try and ensure his re-election.

The idea you suggest is ridiculous. Trump is lucky to be alive and he knows it.

Trump could be incredibly lucky or there are other reasons. Trump says the bullet pierced his right ear but there is no picture of that other than blood covering his ear. One would expect that the bullet corkscrewed a fair amount by the distance (200 yards) . The wound should have been consistent with that. His hair around the right ear was intact. That is why I thought the shooter was much nearer than where Crooks was and behind Trump.
