Power cut outs.

Hi, I have just joined and have got a 2 week old Carrera Vulcan. This was an upgraded bike after having a battery corrosion problem with a Vengeance. This Vulcan cuts power when you apply pressure to the pedals to get you up a steep section of hill. No error codes or screen going off. If you continue to pedal, power stays off. If you stop, which means you don't make it up, the power comes back on when you start pedalling again. I think this is a fault. Halford say it's a built in protection to stop motor overheating. This has been added apparently as an updated spec to stop motor problems. Has anyone any knowledge of this new system? Surely it should be able to climb hills?

That's very worrying because they could be right. There's a really nice lightweight system from Keyde that I tried several years ago. That was the same. Every time I went up a hill, the temperature sensor cut power to the motor, which sort of defeated the idea of having an electric bike to help you up hills. The motor never felt hotter than warm, so the temperature sensor cut-off was set unnecessarily low.

The Previous version of the Vulcan and Crossfire had a really annoying habit of randomly cutting power, which I'm pretty sure was down to an inappropriately placed or over-active temperature sensor. It looks like instead of sorting out the problem, they've added another to mask it.

I would take the bike back and change it for a Vengeance, which has a much simpler system, so doesn't suffer from the cut-outs. With any bike, you can get random instances of water ingress. You were probably just unlucky with your last one unless Halfords knows different.

Put mudguards on to keep water off the battery.

Comparing the 2 though the Vulcan is much better, my Vengeance was never right so maybe I didn't get a proper experience. Range on my Vengeance was mid 20s, in eco. Battery terminals were nearly corroded through in 6 months and I look after my bikes. Nowhere near the power of the Vulcan. The Issue was reported very early on and has just been sorted by this bike replacement. Surely then it can't be fit for purpose if it can't climb properly. I'm not talking anything extreme either. Their opening line on the description is "make light work of mountains" maybe just little ones.

Maybe a mountain to them means a speed hump !!!!!!
Take it back for a full refund and forget about Halfrauds, Decathlon have a couple of bikes for about 1k a hybrid and a mtb.
