Hi. I have recently purchased a second hand euro. It is not working at present. Current situation is battery has been on charge for 10 hours plus but still showing amber light. Battery pack is warm so suspect that the charger is doing the job. Connected a 12v supply direct to the motor and it spins. Once the pack is connected to the bike no lights on the gauge are showing. Suspect either the batteries are gone. (Bike has been stood for some time) controller or switch at fault. Advice would be appreciated before I dig out my meter. Cheers Rob

Have you got a multimeter? If not, you can get one for about, £5-10 on eBay, screwfix or tool station.

Hi. Got a meter. My plan is first to see what volt the pack is producing. Following that is look at the key swich and controller unit. Step by step guide would be perfect for me. Cheers Rob

Nice bike. Your batteries are knackered. SLA batteries must be charged every month to stop them from committing suicide.

Any recommendations as to batteries? There are a few 15ah ones on ebay for around £70 which say are for elec bikes

Also any guidance on swapping the batteries would be good. Is it as straightforward as removing screws disconnect spades remembering which one went where then reassemble?

Are you saying lithium is the way to go? I thought maintained sla batteries although heavy do the job. Was hovering over ebay buy it now until the last post.

Depends on how you want to use your bike, affordability and mileage you require.
SLA:
Pro's; Cheap to buy , easy to charge.
Con's; Heavy, less cycle charges, poor range(mileage), Voltage sag.

Li-on:
Pro's; 3 x longer life cycle, lighter by half, good range and less voltage sag, easier to mount anywhere, easy to charge in built BMS.
Cons; More expensive.

The bike is only to be used for 10 mile commute and small cycle trips with kids (trailer bike attached). Do you think sla batteries will do the job?

Yes. Make sure that you get proper electric vehicle ones from a reputable dealer.

SLAs will cost more in the long run, as they are only good for about 200 charge cycles (less than a year of commuting).

If it was mine I'd put a 10ah lithium in it for about £250

Well finally dug out my meter. Batteries are showing 30v. Checked charger and shows 42v at lead. Had a quick look around the controller and no loose wires, etc. No lights are showing on the panel. Would you expect to see any with 30v? All advice greatly appreciated. Rob

30v indicates the batteries are toast I'm afraid.

Just stripped the battery pack and each side of the batterys are like the alps. Guess they are shot. Battery terminals as soldered rather than spade. Does this indicate an older version?

Just bought a set of leoch 15ah batteries. Should arrive tomorrow. Fingers crossed it is just a battery problem.
